In those days even merchant ships had to be armed. It was easy enough to paint fake gun ports to scare would be pirates and conversion from warship to merchant was not unheard of.

That is the "Hawaiian Chieftain".
Below is a link that will take you to a site featuring the "Hawaiian Chieftain" and her sister ship "Lady Washington", it's well worth browsing through the site.
Several years ago I was in Greys Harbor and was able to board and inspect the "Lady Washington", a great experience.
