    Trivia

If mares eat oats, and does eat oats, what do little lambs eat? Anyone want to give it a try? (Since this is the English language, I should clarify something. The "does" referred to is the plural of the female deer. It is not as John does what he wants.)

Little lambs eat 'Ivies' I believe is the correct response. How old is that song anyway? 1920's ?

        From Wikipedia:

At first glance, the song's refrain, as written on the sheet music, seems to be meaningless:
Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldnt you?

However, the lyrics of the bridge provide a clue:
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy."

That didn't take long. "Ivy" is the correct word. I'm pretty sure the song was from the 40s. I remember it, as a kid.

Since it's, " A kid'l (will) eat ivy, too" (as in, also), that means that kids will eat ivy *and* oats! It took me a while as a kid to figure out that line becaue it sounded like 'kiddly divey too', which is nonsensical.

personally Chiz, I think the lambs eat ivy, and the baby goats (kids) will *also* eat ivy... no reference to them eating oats also (although they probabaly will).

As for my preference, I don't eat ivy, altho I did go to an Ivy school.

I'll have to go along with Loring on that one. Hope that doesn't keep you from sleeping, Chiz.
