Where do I buy laptop's internal battery?

My Thinkpad 600x seems to have a dead 'internal battery' : the clock resets to Jan 1 2000 each time I reboot.

Funny thing is, I am unable to find a seller online for it. Having never seen what one looks like, I am assuming this must be one of those button cells, or at least the kind that can be popped out and replaced by another, but googling for it only shows up the regular battery (Li-Ion, that you use for the laptop itself). Can I not purchase a spare internal battery?

In my very limited experience, that's usually considered a repair-shop type deal. Try online merchants who specialize in refurbed/used/vintage computer sales. The batteries are replaceable by mere mortals, but sometimes require special/uncommon tools.

Of the two laptop internal batteries I've replaced in my life, one was a button, and the other looked like a cordless phone battery, the ones with two or three little cells wrapped in plastic with two wires sticking out.

Again, my experience in this is VERY limited.

It's commonly called a "CMOS Battery" because it's used to back up the CMOS (low power) memory.

Its a primary (not rechargeable) and they are usually lithium button cells, 3V Two or three sizes are used - CR2025 is most common. And very commonly available at most computer stores, office supply stores, radio shack, and many department stores.

Searched for CMOS BATTERY THINKPAD 600 and got a bunch of useful hits. Here's one that tells you the battery type and how to replace it.

If that's not enough help try googling the terms I gave above.

        Thanks both.

Loring, that link is great - tells me all that I need to know about the repair.
And CMOS battery is right on - see one on ebay for $1.95 !

        thanks again.

Check out your local battery places. I just replaced (~2 weeks ago) my CMOS battery in my ThinkPad 600e (I LOVE this LT) for $3.18 out the door. I just brought mine in, and they "re-built" it by simply soldering on the leads from the one I brought in and then shrink wrapping it.

Replacing it couldn't be easier...just unscrew the screw on the back, open the door and take the battery out (Yellow shrink wrap with two wires sticking out).
