My old DP to "a good home" - maybe not...

I've mentioned this guy before - years ago?

Sold him the DP - he and his wife visited today - usually every second week. LOML and his wife are the friends - he and I aren't!

I included a framed pulley speed chart I made up, as part of the deal.

Him: I s'pose you only have to change the belts for metal?
Me: ...and any large drill bits.
Him: How do read that chart you gave me?
Me: (Demonstrating) The pulley sizes on left go A,B,C,D,E - the one one the right goes 1,2,3,4. The chart shows the speed for each combination of pulleys.
Him: How do you change how fast the chuck thing spins?
    Me:

    The cruncher -
Him: I can't get a drill [bit] in the chuck thing - where's the chuck key?
Me: (Demonstrating) It's a keyless chuck.
Him: So I have to turn it by hand?
    Me:

I know I'm being unfair - BUT would you let him use anything with a motor in it?

did he really want this thing to use or was it just a "deal" to be done?

At least you didn't sell him something really dangerous... like a table saw without a guard.

When did my neighbor move to Australia?

              Dp woes.......

Rod, I think this guy is a real duh?, if you know what I mean. Sounds as if there is nothing but dirt and dust between his ears, you could shine a flashlight in one ear and see it out of the other one! About a thousand
miles of dry, dusty, empty space there! eezlock

                Rod-

Being safety-conscious as you are, and not wanting to be liable for any potential damage/injury that may occur, there is only one viable solution to this situation:

-you and your wife need to visit when he's not around

-sneak out to the tree where he has it tied up (obviously not in a "shop") and remove the power cord

-attach a BT3 blade height adjustment wheel to the side of the housing

Next time you see him, ask him how it's running, and remind him it is a manually powered DP, and bit speed is determined by the speed the "crank" on the side is turned.

If he is having trouble operating this, apologize profusely, offer to take it back & have a look at it, reattach the power cord, then either keep it or find a new owner that knows the difference between a drill and a saw.

This last step is purely optional. You may just want to let him keep it with the crank and no cord....should be safe enough.

I know it's a lot of effort, but I think it will put your mind at ease
                Ken W.

Maybe if you tell him it won't work unless it's plugged in, he'll back out of the deal, and you can sell it to someone a little more appreciative.

                  Regards,
                  Tom

Actually - his wife bought it for him for his birthday.

She is a very accomplished Quilter (this is the LOML link).

She must know - I wonder if she has another agenda?

                      Like what, insurance money?
I can see it now, new BT3 group novel: Wife with Klutzy, bumbling, inept husband buys him complex and dangerous power tools, buys lots of death and dismemberment insurance; requests him to build quilting furniture and display racks...

Maybe she is in the process of quilting his coffin and it trying to help things along?
