I used to backpack. I had to give it up because of arthritis in my right foot and nerve damage in a shoulder. Still have all of the equipment and need to part with some of it. Hope he enjoys it. I never got the chance to hike the Appalachian trail but wanted too.

First "sawdust envy".......and then "tool envy"........and "shop envy"........now even here I have to deal with "AT envy"?

Some day, when I get some free time (boy, have I heard THAT before).....

Just kidding! Hope the hike goes great, & looking forward to a safe return, with plenty of pics.

Adele, What section is he hiking? I've hiked from the NC/Connecticut border south to the Blue Ridge and another 80 miles or so in NC. My dad has section-hiked the entire trail. He did the last section in 2005. Last summer he through-hiked the Penine Way in England.

My wife spends a few weeks each summer leading backpackers somewhere in the West. Recently it's been the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs all along the Sierra Nevada range, a section at a time. Sometimes I go along if its only a few days, but this summer they're doing the hike to Mt. Whitney. It's about 60 miles over 8 or 9 days, mostly above 9,000 feet.

There's a hard core group of folks that usually accompanies her but every once in a while, someone is surprised that the leader is all of five feet tall, female, and has just celebrated her 39th birthday...for the 23rd time.

I'm envious. Two things I wanted to do were climb Figi and hike the Appalachian Trail. Got close on the first, but some Japanese climbers were killed the week before we were going and the C.O. pulled the plug on all climbing trips to the mountain. Spent 6 years in SC but never got the time to go on an extended hike. Now the back won't take that kind of abuse.
