    What scares you?

2 years ago I had to rush home after my wife hit her head on a garden stone lining. Turns out she saw a lizard dart in front of her and she jumped so hard that she slipped and fell and bled buckets. That day was lost in the urgent care, and took her couple of months to heal.

Once things had settled down I had told her that I'd not be scared of anything smaller than me in size. Of course she disbelieved me - 'lemme see when it happens'.

The other day we were at the Science Museum and this lady was sitting there with a large python for educational purposes - kids (and adults) were supposed to walk up and ask questions. Very few did; I went up to pet it, and it very smoothly wound itself around my arm then started up around my neck. (Seems that's how they catch their prey). The lady was surprised that I was not creeped out; more so my wife.

Finally, yesterday wife was helping me clean up a portion of the garage when she screamed and jumped away; I turned to see a huge garden lizard (almost 2 feet long) on top of my wood-pile staring at me from a distance of 10 inches. We stared at each other at great length, then he decided he had enough and scampered away. Wife said weakly - really, nothing does scare you!

I realized that was high praise, so I kept quiet. I did not not remind her that I do get scared : when asked to dance or sing or anything like that. No small scare - my heart pounds, I lose oxygen and I risk blacking out. I hated it when my brother got married - I had to dance and there were cameras rolling to record it for posterity. Thank god that was the end of it!

    So, my score :
Animals, reptiles, etc - no fear. Public dancing - mortal terror.

    What scares you?

About six months ago my 3 1/2 year old son was taking a bath. I was in the kitchen for a few minutes doing something and decided I'd better go in and check on him. When I walked into the bathroom he was laying motionless at the bottom of the tub.

My blood ran cold and I began the process of freaking out. Just then he popped up out of the water. I asked him what he was doing and he said "playing alligator."

At this point in my life - age itself. My body is slowly giving out like my hair did long ago. Each day I wake up is great! Who knows? Might live to be 100 ....

If I have a chance to see them first not much scares me. But they can surprise me if I'm not expecting them. I've held 12 ft. pythons and will inspect spiders and bugs before deciding whether they live or die. But if I saw my kid or grandkid face down in a bathtub I’d go absolutely crazy.

Ya, that one realyl gets to me at time, especially having 3 kids under 5 years old (oldest has no fear at the moment) ... but other than that, not much else does ...

Public speaking is the worst. I am terrified when doing it. My heart starts pounding and I lose my concentration. I have even started shaking all over. That's fun knowing everybody is looking at you shaking like a leaf. Now after awhile I calm down but for the first 5 to 10 minutes it's ****. Oh and anything that can hurt me from snakes to large dogs. I'm just a chicken s_ _ t guess but that's the way I'm made and the older I get the worst I'm getting.

Heights! I like the view but from a few feet back from the edge. These days even steep hillsides scare me.

Yeah, kids getting hurt...that's a big one. Both my girls were preemie so everything was kid gloves for a while. One daughter fell down a flight of stairs while sleep walking. I don't remember getting to the bottom of the stairs but when I got there, my daughter was still asleep. Ok, but still asleep.

Tall bridges. Can't deal with them. Have to stop at toll booth and ask to be put behind a semi truck so I can stare at the back of it while I drive over. The Macinaw bridge in northern Mich. is one I dread. 5 miles long and a couple of hundred feet up over open water. Give me a tunnel any day.

Heights don't bother me, but I've never flown in a plane (don't want to). My wife is just the opposite. She'll fly, but just keep her out of the mountains.

One night years back in the Marine Corps we were doing night land nav. A couple of the Sgts. had taken out one of the 240Gs (machine gun) and some night vision goggles. So we know that there's going to be an ambush somewhere. Later on that night we're coming up on our third nav point and I'm on point. We crest a hill and I spot a chem light so I halt the squad. We see that someone had hung a chem light off our third point. The whole thing screamed ambush. That's when our squad leader gets the bright idea "Crooks, go check it out."
Nice. Go walk into that ambush.
Now I KNEW as I was slithering down that hill that there was nothing more dangerous out there than a couple of our Sgts ready to fire off a string of blanks at me, but there was still a cold fear that ran through me. I have never really felt anything like that before or since. It gave me a whole new respect for the guys that do something like that for real.

                              I must be weird...

(yeah, I know) but I really enjoy public speaking, performing, public dancing, etc.

Not too squeamish around blood until the emergency's over.... The one thing that gets my heart pounding, head aching, etc., is mmmmath. Just can't do it.
