Vacation time - how much do you get?

For employed persons only, not self-employed.

This came up at work today. Some folks get 2 weeks (even after 5 years) of "personal time" - vacation + sick leave + anything else. Some get 2 weeks "vacation" + 1 or 2 weeks "sick leave".

    So:

If you get "personal time" - how much? How many years have you worked for that?

If you get "vacation" + "sick" - how much of each? And how many years have you worked for that?

    Any other variations?

      I get 8 days for sick/personal.

Two days off in October for fall break. Three days for Thanksgiving break. Two weeks for Christmas break. One week for Spring break. All of June and July for summer break.

      I guess I work about 210 days a year.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Personal / sick time (after 1 year) = 8 hours / month Max 160 hrs. Use or lose.

Vaction 0 years = 0 weeks, 1-4 years = 1 week, 5-9 years = 2 weeks, 10+ = 3 weeks. Can carry your time over for 1 year. In other words you have 2 years to to use your time.

18 days vacation, no set limit on sick days- manager's discretion kinda thing.
Vacation is use it or lose it, no carryover, no payout

I'm self-employed, so don't qualify to answer this, so I will answer on behalf of my father.

He was a daily columist for the local newspaper. According to the stats, he was apparently the #1 read column in town (Milwaukee).

For the last fifteen years before retiring, he worked from home. He would get out of bed about 8:30, drink coffee till about 9:30 while taking calls, then spend about 1.5 hours cranking out his column.

Once a week he would go to the office to get his mail. Every other week he picked up his check on the mail run.

Otherwise, he refused to participate in office meetings. Maybe once or twice a year he would meet w/ someone.

For approx. the last ten or fifteen years, he got twelve (yes, 12!) weeks of paid vacation.

With all that (only working a half day, twelve weeks vacation, working from home, etc.), he just could not stand doing it any more. And any time they asked him to do something he would answer, "I'd rather quit." So they never asked.

He retired about ten years ago and unfortunately began to exhibit signs of ALS, and went downhill quickly after that.

I only "take" about two weeks of vacation a year. But every time someone asks about vacation I love telling 'em about the guy that worked part-time, FULL income, and 12-weeks vacation. He was no dummy.

                  19.5 Annual
                  13 Sick
                  10 Holidays
                  2-3 Days for Snow (usually)

My use or lose is maxed at 240 hours so I have to take 19.5 annual this year or I lose them.

I think I have like 300 hours of sick leave built up.

Translation: I'm never at work. I realize how good I have it.

                    Vacation Time?

After 10 years I got 3 weeks and 5 sick/personal days per year. Not to long ago the company that I work for was bought out by a competitor and as of now the only time off we get is a straigt 40 hrs sick/personal time and no vacation time. It appears all of us are considered new hires. Needless to say I'm planning on moving on to bigger and better.

I'm no longer working, so all of my days are "personal days". I worked a little over 30 years in a steel mill. During that time, there was a period (of about 7 or 8 years) where people with 20 plus years of service would get 5 weeks paid vacation. But once out of every 5 year period, they would get 13 weeks paid vacation. I got that once before they did away with it, and went back to 5 weeks for 20 years service, period.. We never got sick days or personal days paid. When I left, I got 5 weeks vacation each year.

Well currently 3 weeks vacation ... (would have been 5 weeks had I not take control of my future and carrer direction and joined a new start-up company ... never been a regret yet so far).

No real limit for sick days ... take them as you need them ... employer is pretty cool about that ...

As for "Personal" or "Family Emergency" days ... it's the same thing, take them as you need them, no real questions asked as long as you have a vaild reason ... no one abuses it yet so far.

I also average about another week or so a year in "take tommorrow or Friday off for your hard work" perks from the company partners ... I tend to have to deal with the "after hours" or "Emergency support" calls in the evenings and weekends so it's sort of a nice pay back.

No one ever questions the hours I work, as in start or leave ... so it's like having flex hours as well ...

I'm on salary so I get paid regardless if I there or not ... but at the same time, I don't get paid for all the overtime I do put it ... but my salary does make it worth it IMO.

Even though I don't believe in reincarnation, in my next life I'm going to be a school teacher ... they just get way TOO many days off compared to the rest of us!

When I retired I was getting 2 and a half days vacation per month. We were allowed to cash in unused days at the end of the year. Sick leave was accrued at the same rate with no cashing in of unused days. No carry over to the next year was allowed for either type of leave.

Both of these accural schedules were earned after 10 years service.

Personal time (same as comp time at the police department) was supposedly non-existant when I retired as all overtime was to be documented and paid. I and a few of the old timers (to the consternation of the union reps) refused to put in for overtime unless it amounted to an hour + and wasn't caused by our laziness or mistakes. Our bosses were very accomodating when we requested a couple of hours or even a day or two personal time.
