If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Talk about close calls -- I almost opened a soda before I read this!

I liked the "find x", but I think my 12-yr-old is gonna like the elephant better.

    Regards,
    Tom

At one time in my life, I could answer most of these in my sleep. X is easy - 5, as in a 3,4,5 right triangle. The engineer who designed the ocean liner got fired because the sink temp was higher than the source temp. I'd have to think about the polynomial expansion for a while. I think the spring deflection is .15meters and the ball will return to it's original height, assuming the whole system is frictionless.

Are you or your wife schoolteachers?

Not so, jackellis. There is clearly an elephant in the way.

Something about the pre-teen brain. My 12-year-old liked that one, too.

You're right, Alex. It'll hit the elephant on the way down.

My original answer stands *assuming* there's no elephant and no friction.

There was a running joke about what you needed to know in order to pass the first physics course every engineering student took at my alma mater (Georgia Tech). First, f=ma (force = mass times acceleration). Second, you can't push on a string.

I didn't think any of these needed explanation but apparently the software thought so...

"A JPEG lossy compressed image file is worth 5 kilobytes of ASCII text".

I had to cut and paste that 200 times on the clipboard for punishment.

That is hilarious scorrpio. I will have to show that to some of the nerds at my work.
