For take out I don't tip 15%. I usually will tip close to 2$ for take out if I am a regular.

I just love when they like to put the tip line on the reciept when paying with a credit card and they people that would get the tip are working for minimum wage, not the waiter/waitress minimum wage either.

never tip to go. At resteraunts I usually double the tax. Which we pay 11% here for resteraunt tax...Pretty ludicrous hey. But When we go to a cheap resteraunt I feel they shouldn't be penalized because the bill is much less than say olive garden or cheesecake factory. So I might tip 25-30% when the food bill is much cheaper which could still be less than other resteraunts.

It depends on where I am. A coffee shop does not get a tip. The Japanese steakhouse place does not get a tip - their business is designed to be mostly takeout so I expect them to price accordingly. The takeout we get from sit-down places I tip but smaller than if I'd eaten there. That is because I am ordering 3 dinners and specializing it some for my wife. If it were just me ordering a burger and fries I would not tip.

It depends. Sometimes I don't tip if they are not waitresses (meaning making less than minimum wage), but if the girls that do the "curb side to go" at Ruby Tuesdays are waitresses and I do usually tip them. If the weather is bad, I tip bigger, and the ones that pet and engage the pups get bigger tips too.

Some other places I tip too even though it's their JOB. Barber. if I like the way he cuts my hair I'll give him a good tip. I like it when he remembers me and knows how I like my hair cut. (And if I don't tip him, I might not like the next cut near as much)

That is a good point. I will also do the same for just average service at a really night place. I've been to a place where the food is incredible and usually the service is too. A dinner of two is almost $100. (Obviously I don't go often.) When I get just OK service, I don't give 15%. The food is that high, because they deliver or you send it back. I can't "send back" the service, so they get a $5 tip instead of a $15 tip. I'm sure they will make it up during the night, unless they keep treating customers the same way.

Call me a tightwad but I don't tip for takeout!
                  For resturants I frequent:
                  Normal service 15%
                  Great Service 20%
Losey service 10% or less depending on how bad.
I have left a penny in a glass of water when really annoyed by bad service.

I don't mind hearing it, but keep it to yourself if it stinks.

                        I usually don't tip for take-out/togo/takeaway
I tip maybe 10-15% for buffet... how mch service do you get there other than drink refill and some new plates?

I used to tip 15-20% on the pretax amount for dinner, nowadays, I just do 15% of the taxed amount. 20-25% if I really get good service.

                        So here's a question:
It seems to me as if the restaurants pool the tips and share them proportionally among the buss staff and wait staff.
So if you leave a nice tip for a waiter who did a good job on the credit card (not cash on the table) will they know you left a more than typical tip? Does it still motivate them individually if the tip is pooled and split among the staff?
Admittedly they usually these days all share responsibility to bring the food (which is good because hot food is very important) but in the end its your waiter who is promarily repsonsible for your satisfaction.

I'll tip normal amount if I know they share their tips, even if the service is really good / bad (one person). I don't adjust the tip since I don't feel they would be individually motivated. I don't think a slacker would last long in one of those places.

If the whole place is really great / really bad, and you can tell, then I would adjust the amount.

When they don't share tips I tip accordingly.

I never tip for take out! For delivered pizza I usually tip the driver; but I live outside of the city limits and I get great service from a Pizza Hut. Not the best pizza but it fills me up and makes a turd!

I'm peeved that tipping somehow became an entitlement! It used to be 10% for satisfactory service, which as I remember it was far superior to most I get now-a-days! So now with satisfactory service I tip, fro excellent service I tip 15% or $5 depending on how much the meal cost. Sometimes I go a little above 15% but rarely. I've never tipped bar keeps, just do not think someone doing their job desrves a tip! And getting me a drink is what bar keeps are supposed to do when I order one. If they wanted tips they should have chosen a different profession. In my town many of these jobs are being done by college students which also out compete the local residents for jobs. Most students these days drive better cars than my daily driver and do not have three kids, a wife and two dogs that need to eat! Sympathy for their short lived questionable poverty is not given by me.

I think in the restaurant where my daughter works, the buss boy gets a percentage of tips. But the waitresses do not split. It might be different at some other restaurants, or in different parts of the country.
