    Second Hobby Forum?

    Hey Guys and Gals.
I was just wondering what some of you thought about adding another area to the Forum. That being either questions or project posts or boasts about your other or secondary hobbies. I know many of us came together because of woodworking, but many also have some very interesting second hobbies or interests. This is apparent by many post I see covering a multitude of topics.
Perhaps we could even have project logs or builds. I know I follow the RC threads with interest as well as many others. I do have another area of interest that is kinda merging with woodworking lately with the sale of the craftsman carving machine and that is CNC stuff. I know there are many others. I just want your thoughts.
I know its been asked before about expanding the forum, but maybe this would be a good area to include.
    What say y'all?

Maybe we should have a thread in itself to see what else everybody else is into? It sounds like it might be a good idea if there are enough people to take part.

Heck, we can get it started right here.

I like to water ski. I'm past the point of competition, but I won't hesitate to grab a slalom and cut 'till my legs shake.

Sounds like a winner to me. I enjoy doing photo restorations, and I'm a little into genealogy since my father died before I was a month old.

I fly kites and have made a few of my own. Here is one I made a few years ago. It was supposed to be 12' from tip to tip but is actually a few inches larger to keep the aspect ratio correct.

Would LOVE to see one on the Craftsmen Wood Carver unit
Have wanted one since before Sears bought the name from Carve Write but I am WAY not computer savvy enough to give it a fling
So if we opened a forum on this group for specifically CNC and Carve Write count me in
Of course if you want to talk BBQ I would GLADLY play there as well. Geri and I are two of the top BBQ judges in the country traveling a few thousand miles each year to criss cross the USA to judge at competitions
We have been on TV about 6 times form a few episodes of Food TV to even a show on PBS

If you are in the Orlando area contact me lets get together and talk saw dust (or food or anything else you like except sports)

My wife and I are National Food Judges so we CAN talk food with the best.

I personally don't see the need for another forum for other hobbies. Around the coffee pot seems fine. This is just MHO though.

As far as CNC/Laser, do we have any owners of these machines who are active on this site? I will probably get one of the Sears versions, however I am going to wait a couple years for the bugs to get worked out (or until I can get one on clearance in couple years! LOL!). There are WAY too many problems with the machine as it is being shipped. Check out the forums at the other two big WW sites.

Edit: Man I love BBQ! I miss living in the South! When I first moved up here I worked in an office and they were having a department lunch thing. Someone signed up to bring "BBQ". Man I was stoked! She shows up with a crockpot full of sloppy Joe! It was a crock for sure!

I am kind of with Jeff on this one. There are too many different hobbies we all have and Around the Coffee Pot works pretty well for it.

A carving section (not limited to CNC carving) isn't a bad idea though, this is another aspect of wood working different from the others, just like the turning section.

I got into chip carving a few years ago, kind of lost interest in it though as I just don't have the time right now.

See there, thats a wide variety of secondary hobbies right there.

I may agree that the coffee pot section has large enough boots to carry the load, but I was thinking more for posterity. The newer search features are better than before though so would it really matter where something was listed? Probably not.

I don't have the carve wright. That was just an example really. It is plagued with Gremlins right now for sure, however most seem to be minor.
I built my own cnc router when my woodworking hobby took of into a job. Much less woodworking now. I still manage to do some though.

The router turned out better than expected and I'm able to mill aluminum on it. Wohooo! It won't do steel and I make some steel parts. I have been slowly amassing everything for a second and third CNC machine. Currently working on a mill and then a plasma cutter. I was thinking it might be interesting to post the build log for this here. The last time I mentioned this, I got lots of interest. I enjoyed Larry's Helo threads. Those kites are very cool.
Here are a couple images that may spark some interest in what I am doing.

Cool idea. Everytime I post, my avatar promotes my "other hobby". Here, "around the coffe pot" or in a separate area, there will soon be pictures of my first attemp at a scale helo. Stay tuned!

I've participated in other forums in which there were a lot more sections than we have here, and contrary to what one might think, it actually makes it HARDER for people to figure out where to post something. I personally think the current lineup of woodworking- and tool-related sections is just about ideal. So as a rule, I'm usually opposed to adding more sections.

This proposal might be okay, though. Basically it would be another catch-all section like Coffee Pot, and would split part of the load out of that section. I think it might be good to separate the "serious" off-topic stuff from the "not serious" stuff that typically litters Coffee Pot (NTTAWWT).
