I got Vonage installed over the weekend. It is running across a DSL connection and I do not have local voice service. So my question is....

Go out to the patch panel on my house and make sure the wire pair for a 2nd line is not connected there. Make up some cables that reverse the 1st/2nd line pairs. Plug one one into the VTA and the other end into a wall jack. Plug phones into the house jacks with my custom cables. This way the DSL is still on the original pair and the voice traffic is on the other.

Yeah it is probably easier to just get a multi-base cordless but I think this is cheaper.

I don't think anything would be reversed would it? The same cable you plug into your router is the same one you would plug into the wall if it was from the phone company.

Go for it. I have vonage running on the second pair for all of my wiring with regular phone on the first pair (no DSL though, I use cable). Works great, I pick up both line in the rooms where I have 2 line phones.

Correct... but unless it is a multiline phone the phone is expecting the signal to be on the 1st pair of lines - Red/Green IIRC. The DSL connection is already on the 1st pair so I need to get the signal from the VTA onto the Yello/black pair. Hence the pair swap, then another cable on the other end to swap it back.

That should work.
If you have 2-line phones then the you can switch between your POTS (plain old telephone service) line and your vonage line.

However, consider this:

Why don't you put the incoming line into your second line in the patch panel box, leaving the 1st line open.
Then at the Vonage box, connect it to the phone jac with a line1 to line2 crossover cable. Then connect the Vonage phone out jack to the wall with a straight cable.
Now your (I assume) Preferred Vonage service will be on line 1 and your DSL on line 2. The Benefit here is that all your conventional 0ne-line phones and phone accessoried (like answering machine, fax etc) will be on their accostomed line 1. If you have a DSL modem then you will also need to connect it to line 2 using a crossover cable.

I use Sunrocket but as you are considering I connected the adapters phone output to the house jacks. There should be no problem using a second pair for the DSL.

That is a good idea about switching the lines at the patch panel. I will just have to put a note in there for the telco service guy if it ever comes to that.
