    Actually getting paid for woodwork

Yep, got a check today for $51 for scrap wood.

My office needed something to keep name tags from getting jumbled on a table. They were looking for a magnetic board that the metal clasp would stick to. At $100+ then needing a way to hold it up it just didn't make sense.

I offered to make something that would do the job. so when I got home that evening I went in the shop and dug out some scraps that were about 3/4x2x18 and cut slots in them at an angle. Made 10 of them out of 5 different woods.

So they now have a way to prop up name tags in mutliples of 9 and the things look nice to boot.

They asked me for an invoice and bingo. $51 Not bad for less than an hour work and scrap wood.

Now they've asked me to do another project out of Maple ply. 1 sheet is $42 (and I'll have leftover) and I'm going to charge them $150 for the project.

If at first you don't succeed, deny you were trying in the first place.

Don't feel guilty about taking their money. If they didn't trust you to make something they would have spent more than that at Office Depot for something plastic that says "Made In .........."(not in U.S.A.).

So, good for you, this is a start. Now what will happen is someone in the office will ask if you can make a wall unit.

Since getting a lathe on Christmas I have made just shy of $200 selling pens. So at least I can make more. I charge $10 for the slimlines. So depending on what kind of wood im using I make a little profit on them but I really just want to make enough to keep buying more kits without my wife complaining.

Mike: Well done! I love it when something sorta falls into your lap. Also, the recognition by others, of your abilities, is a sweet thing.
