David, I wonder if they mean they suspect the athlete of having had a sex change operation? (The article quotes an anonymous source as saying No; I'm wondering if they believe it.) Because if not, I'm with you: if there's any single test that ought to be a slam-dunk no-brainer ...

Interesting. The statement that the athlete "had more Y chromosomes than allowed" kind of rules out a simple sex change operation which of course would be all XY. Could be Klinefelter's Syndrome (XXY) or one of its variants (some cells XY male, some XXY; or even XXXY, XXXXY, XXYY). So, the IOA may be correct in that there is a chromosomal abnormality.

But I wonder just how many Y-chromosomes they allow? There are also XYY males. Would they have "too many?"

Larry yes, there are some athelets(from what I understand only men) that will have a gender change operation so they can compete with women.

couldnt a gynocologist say more than "almost certainly"
they should have one of them on CSI or something...
there was one grism solved of course about having two blood types I think...some goofy disease he could tell by looking at skin or something under UV light????I dont remember exactly....

When I lived in OKC I knew the urologist who did sex change operations. Believe me, you can't always be sure just by looking! One of the prettiest "woman" I ever saw was born a man. And I worked with a male doc who used to be a woman, a fact he disclosed after I'd known him for months. Had no idea. On a complete medical exam it's usually obvious, but that's not what they're talking about here.

No, probably not Klinefelters although there are some weird variations. More likely an infant born with ambiguous genitalia, you look at birth and can not tell if they are male or female because the genitals are malformed in various ways.

I don't know what the current procedure is, but in the "old" days these infants were operated on to "create" female genitals since this was the easier of the surgeries to do. At puberty they are given estrogens for further development. So, even if a genetic XY-male, they are physically female.
