as far as a non religious look on life, i have always liked a quote from one of Robert Heinlein books, Time Enogh for Love.
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
It may not be the meaning of life, but it does remind me of why I do all of the different things i do, and things that i still want to try. Reflects what many refer to as a "Renaissance Man". Anyway as cheesy as it may come across, I do remind myself that when i am doing someything that I would really prefer not to, that it is one more thing I can put on my resume of life.
I enforce this same idea with my son, who is 14 now, and definatley has more expereince at doing different things than many of todays young adults, and can outwork a lot of them. And while he would rather be doing cool things like framing a house or welding a car frame, playing football, he does understand why its important to be able to do laundry or cook a meal, even if it "sucks"
I think a lot of you can probably relate since you are on this board, wordworking with you hands as a hobby, while keeping your day job, raising families, and maintaining a household.
I never go off in a huff. I might go off in a Chevy or Ford, but never a huff.
I believe that you live and then you die. Purpose, who knows for sure. I just try to go through life causing a little damage as possible to others, and trying not to be noticed. A whale only gets harpooned when he surfaces to spout.
Seriously, I try to leave my little corner of the world a little better and little safer for others.
A man without a shillelagh, is a man without an expidient.
