    A Rather Wild Story

These events unfolded like a screen play for a movie. About 20 years ago, before the PC most drafting was done by hand. My shop is in a county of over 1 3/4 million people. My clientele varied from retail type calls by homeowners from the yellow pages to designers and architects. Some of the professional contacts became continued clients which I delt with frequently.

This story is about a new contact, a designer who said she had seen my work (I was published a few times). She asked me to do a drawing for one of her clients in order for her to get the work. Part of her story made sense in that she had raved to her client about me and wanted something to show. So, being a nice guy and rent time was getting close, provided the drawings. Was about a week later, her client called me on the phone and asked if she could come in for an estimate, and of course I said yes. She came in with MY drawing, but with the name block missing. I asked her how she found me she said the yellow pages. Well, I told her I would have to call her the next day. I immediately called the designer and she said she didn't know anything about it. I called the homeowner the next day and quoted her the full retail price. About a week later, a guy from another cabinet shop comes in for an estimate to build a wall system, saying he had the job, but was too busy, and it was a little beyond the scope of his shop. HE HAD MY DRAWINGS, without a nameblock of course.

I gave him a price where he could make a little, and I would be satisfied. He said OK. Then I took out my original drawings and showed them to him, and we both had a great laugh.

Some people have no ethical standards. This story hits close to home because yesterday I got a 6 page company ethics policy to read and sign.

That would annoy me with the drawing..

Ethics is a funny conversation piece. My second shift people will complain that first shift waits 5-10minutes at the punch clock to punch out. If you are there 10 minutes before second shift leaves, they are doing the same thing. The shoot themselves in the foot constantly.

My Brother is an Architect and He recently designed a new office for a Dentist. They spent many hours on it, did the sitework put the plans up for bid. No money had changed hands at this time. Dentist decided it was more than He could afford so got another Architect out of Little Rock to design. He used My Brothers plans and just mostly changed the name on them. We went to the jobsite as it was being built, Brother picked up the plans, looked at them, rolled them up and We went down to the Dentist office. Not only did My Brother get paid for all His work but a large bonus. The Dentist has lost all respect in the community. Bill

I'm sure that a few words were exchanged prior to him getting paid ... the dentist is lucky it didn't go any further than that ....
