why do very few poeple here use the reputation system?

I don't care for it. Very few people here do I really know well enough to make a judgement call on. And those I do know well enough I see no benefit in either building up their egos or tearing them down. Just my opinion. PatWoodworking is therapy.....some of us need more therapy than others. <ZERO> -
I guess my reply would be: "There is a reputation system?"
So that is why I don't use it.

I don't know about the other members, but I think it's unnessary, unfriendly, possibly cruel and I stopped making judgements about other people when I turned 55. I also don't really care what others say about me either.

In my experience from other forums the reputation point system was abused heavily once people became aware of the fact that it was available. It became a popularity contest more than a knowledge point system that it should be. If it were up to me I would have it removed or at least let members shut it off in their options choices.Comment

I definitely agree 100% with Doug on this! I think everybody here is mature enough and are very pleasant and respectful of other members that there is not a need for it.
I think this community became infamous due to the members being polite and helpful of others that need help.
I have learned so much from this community that I spend more time reviewing posts than reading woodworking books.Chris

Did not explore the rep system here, but on some other sites, it was a sham. To boot, it was anonymous. And to make it worse, posts drug down to 1-star were by default not showing.
I personally do not believe in giving negative rep. If a post clashes with forum rules, it gets reported. But if I simply disagree with someone's post, I will just post a reply where I express my disagreement.
And positive does not make much sense to me either. Makes an impression that posters are not equal. An excellent contribution by a new person might get overlooked. An erroneous statement by a high-rep old timer might be taken as gospel.
Best, forget the rep, leave posters equal, and let people read posts (and following discussion) and figure things out for themselves.Comment

I have to say three things.
1. Like a lot of others have said, I didn't know there was one (if there is one).
2. I have to say that the people on this board are a mature community. I am very thankful for this. I tend to have a debate-driven style, and views that may upset some. I've found that I can be honest, and debate with people on this board without concern. I have different views with many people here who I still respect greatly (even if they're wrong! haha). It's nice to be able to have higher-level conversations here, and not worry about someone giving you a negative remark just because you disagree on something. On this board you disagree on one thread with someone and then you ask a question and they're helping you find the answer. On another thread you are in complete agreement. That's how a real community should operate, and it takes a high-caliber person to make up that community- as everyone here seems to be. I've always said that, for the most part, people hang out with others who are like them, and this is a community of high-level people discussing, growing, and helping. (Ok, enough of the touchy-feely stuff, haha).
3. Finally, you shouldn't judge someone by what someone else says about them. Read their posts, keep an open mind, and make your own decision. Maybe there are people here who don't particularly care for my posts- and that's fine. I respect them because they move on. Maybe others love my posts (I doubt this! haha). ) because I don't believe there is a 'reputation' feature on BT3 anymore. There used to be - quite a while ago. I'm pretty sure it was disabled. I haven't seen that option here for months!
