I installed a solar domestic hot water heater this year. It preheats the water before it enters the electric water heater. Looked into a grid tied solar electric system (4.2kwh) and a solar pool heater. Solar electric is still to expensive. Based of present rates 15 years just to break even.
As for the pool heater in my area a solar pool heater along with a solar blanket can give you a 10-12 month swimming season at a reasonable initial investment. For a true 4 season climate you would extend your swim season on average 1 month in the spring and 1 month in the fall depending on solar exposure your results may vary.
So far I added a the solar blanket to the pool in the spring and in this climate it did very well for a minimal investment ($100) We'll decide if further heating is needed for the pool as the tempertures cool.
To sum up my research on solar energy. The one technology we need the most is still not practical for the average person (solar electric) Heating water using passive solar energy may give you the best bang for the buck, even if it is only effective 1/2 the year and bypassed the other 1/2.
    Opinions are like gas;
I don't mind hearing it, but keep it to yourself if it stinks.

I just installed "ultra-touch" insulation in my kitchen remodel. it's made of recycled blue jeans, has a great R-value, outstanding sound deadening and best of all....no itch!!

Six years ago I moved my business 1/8-mile from my home, sold one of our cars (we were a two-car family), got a dog, and started walking the dog with me to work. Lately I've been driving almost every day to get supplies, etc. But sometimes I can go an entire week without driving. I do my best to pedal when I can. But, Rockler/Woodcraft are 12-15 miles from here.

My dog, on the other hand, loves riding in the car, and is an ardent proponent of taking the car everywhere we go.

those 2 people indicating alterative fuels for cars, what are you using -
                    80% ethanol? Propane?

Done the isulation, dual pane windows, new heater and a/c we recycle and have a small compost pile. The cars are a different. Wife has a Ford Expediton that gets 18mpg on a long trip. I have a Toyota Tacoma pickup that can get 22-23 on a long trip. I don't think Ethanol will be cheaper than gas and I don't think you will get the MPG either. With straight Methanol you got 1/2 the gas mileage. Ethanol will be better for the air polution and is a renewable resource but how much will it cost. I know Methanol required a more expensive fuel delivery system because of chemical reaction with plastic and other parts of the system. Don't know about Ethanol,l will be interesting to see what happens as we get more into it. I do use the catch and release system in fishing execpt for Salmon unless I snag it then I will let it go. When I worked as an Auto Tech for the CHP we were involved in some testing of Methanol and othe alternative fuels back in the mid 80's and earlier this decade with the electric vehicles and some of the hybreds, not with the enforcement vehicles but with the general pool vehicles, did not go over to good, technology was not there yet. I don't think I would want to drive from Sacramento to Boise Idaho in some of the hybred vehicles to small and uncomfortable for a long trip.

Oops. I now see your profile doesn't list names. The joke is my last name is Green.... Also why I don't have to wear any green clothes on St Paddy's day and why I can quote Kermit the Frog and mean it. .

                          Green waste recycling!

We've got three bins: trash, recycling (no separation required), and green waste.

Californians sends 50% less waste to the landfill than at the peak ~10 years ago.

Well I thought that included diesel.
Our primary family car is a 2004 Golf TDI.
60 MPH on long trips. 45-50 in the city.

Aside from a hybrid we couldn't get any better.
                              Actually better than some hybrids.

I do make up for some with my old '85 chev PU.
