Say hello to my little friend

Found this crawling across the ceiling of the kids playroom this morning. He lost a claw during the capture and I feel bad about that, but hey, I was in only my BVD's and didn't have my glasses on, so I couldn't be too delicate.

It's about 2.5" long. Probably no big deal to you AZ and TX folks, but these aren't a real common sight around here.

I am with your wife on that one Dud. If I found one of those in my house I would get the gun to get rid of it.

Normally not a big problem around here. Summer before last they were bad and people were told not to treat for fire ants. One of the few natural enemies a scorpion has. Not sure which I would rather deal with!

One of the places I lived in India as a kid was crawling (!) with scorpions. We used to make a habit of turning our shoes over and shaking them before putting our feet into them when we got up in the morning.

This was the same place where I used to pass the time using a pellet gun on rats dashing down the hall toward the kitchen, as they passed the open doorway from living room to hall. Kinda like my own private shooting gallery! Great place for a teenager.

I'll repeat Big Steel's question, "What's a scopion doing in Oregon?"

They're NOT native to there, ARE THEY???

Hey, I live in the southern tier of New York, we've got more than enough insects, but at least we don't have scorpions, that I know of anyway. But if they are as far north as Oregon, then who knows?

Around here (Corning / Painted Post, NY) we've got rattlesnakes. They been found 100 yards or so north, south, east, and west of where I live in the village. I've never caught one or seen one and presumed they were the usual small eastern (two to three feet long) variaty. About three weeks ago, a trucker photographed a rattler about five feet long, about a mile west of here.

I told the wife we need to expedite our move back to Binghamton!!!

I get them all the time back home. I've noticed that they seem to appear near sources of water? Like in the kitchen and bathroom. Found lots in the sinks and tubs. My wife really hates it when she's sitting on the couch watching TV and she looks up, only to see a 3" scorpion hanging out on the ceiling above her head. For some reason she does not seem to like it. We've gotten stung a few times each, so have our kids, at least the youngest has been spared that so far. But it is great to have cats! They will find and kill most of them. They can also hear them in the walls, so I can get ready to kill them when they come crawling out. Whenever the cats catch one, they get a kitty treat, I don't remember which kind, but I do know they were not cheap, so the cats absolutely love them, and they know why they get the treat. Good way to keep the scorpions down.

                          Holy Crap!

I guess we're a little spoiled here in Newfoundland. We don't have snakes of any kind, anything poisonous (except the rum), racoons, skunks, killer bees, wolves, grizzly's, badger's, ground hogs, wild cats, cougar's, or porcupines. However there are as many moose and people and black bears are pretty common.....oh yeah, the occasional polar bear jumps off an ice flow in the spring and comes ashore too!

After stepping on a fire ant hill one time I would probably choose the scorpion.

Turns out we've got at least 4 species that are native to Oregon. I did some online research, and the one I found in my house has only been found in a couple places in Oregon, one of them being the Mt. Hood National Forest (adjacent to where I live). During that research, I also came across this, which might interest you, Brian. (Turns out they are found even further north than where I live)

My first instinct when I saw it was to pack up the kids and move back to my native NW Montana. So we had bears & mountain lions (sometimes literally in our yard), but they don't crawl up your leg while watching TV or hide in your shoes!
