    Ebay paypal questions

I was thinking of selling some stuff on ebay, as I upgrade to better tools. My mother got excited as she was wanting to sell some of my grandmothers stuff on there, and she was wanting me to do it (due to lack of time for her, sick relative). I have a lot of reading to do in ebays seller section, but I was wondering, what type of account do I need (paypal) to accept payment via paypal? I know a few people here have sold, so I am hoping for a few pointers.

    Thanks
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I believe you just need a personal account (not business). You will have to pay a small fee if the buyer pays with a CC but it's much more convenient and opens you up to alot more buyers. I know I don't even look at auctions that don't take Paypal.

If at first you don't succeed, deny you were trying in the first place.

Actually upgrade to Premier is totally free and cost $0. It allows you to receive more transactions in a month. There is a very low limit to the number of transactions you can make under a plain jane account. I think to get Premier you just need to do some account verfication which they will walk you through.
Once you have $ in a PayPal account you can send it to other PP folks to pay for things, you can download the money into your checking or you can get a PayPal debit card which is a debit card for use anywhere Mastercard is accepted or you can get $ out of ATM with pin #. Using as a debit card gets you 1% of your purchase back as a cash refund which is pretty cool.

You can sign up with a bank account to pay and receive payments if you do not want to go the credit card route. No fees for the bank transfers but you must tell the buyer that you do not accept credit card payments, just bank transfers. If you do not and the buyer attempts to pay by credit card you will have some problems.

I have been doing it this way for a couple of years and it works very well.

Look back through your history for the last year and verify that is the case. I just looked at 44 payments received in 2006 and there was a fee taken from every single one. I can't imagine at least one person did not use checking account v. credit card. I thought I remembered reading something about a change in that policy, where all transactions were fee based. I know they used to do that, but I think they changed when ebay bought paypal.

Unless something has changed (and it may very well might have), this is a function of your account type. If you have the basic personal account, there are no fees but you can't accept CC payments. If you have a Premier account, you can accept CCs but you are also charged a fee for every buyer's transaction, no matter how they pay.

This is why PayPal pushes everyone to upgrade to Premier. Sure, it's free ... but for infrequent or low-volume sellers or users of the service, it's not a good deal.

There is the answer. Thanks. I thought they may have changed something as you rarely see a "Use Checking Account PayPal Transfer or You Must Pay Fees" disclaimer in peoples auctions.

I think, as in normal business transactions, the buyer eats the CC fees, and in this case, the paypal cash transfer fees. Probably an OK business model because in return the seller gets instant electronic credit instead of waiting for checks to clear or making a trip to the bank with MOs in hand.
