    Vonage

Well I finally upgraded to Wireless G. Got a free vonage router after rebates and $25 giftcard from best buy (plus credit to my reward zone since its a rebate). Still have my phone hooked up to the wall until my number is transfered. But I tested it out and its awsome. It will save me a fortune plus you add virtual phone numbers in case you have someone you want to be able to call you at a local number. You can increase or decrease the sound quality based on amount of bandwidth you have.

The new wireless G is so much better than B I cant believe it.
I had bought the high gain antennas and extension for my B system and it was still not that great. Now the computers upstairs stay connected and much faster too.

Now I gotta try and sell my old wireless B router with all the add ons.
Since you cant even buy the routers any more do you think $100 is a decent price for 1 router, 1 pair of high gain antennas, 1 6 foot extension antenna base and (if I can get a G card for my TIVO 1 wireless B card)
That will at least get my new G card for Tivo.
The antenna's were $70 and I just got them a few weeks ago.
The base was $35 bought that a week before the antennas.

Oh yeah if anyone is interested in vonage and uses a link from me I can get a free month and so can you through their refer a friend program. Let me know.

Darn wished I had read this first. I just signed up a few minutes ago, thus my question.
How long does it take for the Voice Terminal to acquire its network address, down load config profile and register with Vonage and down load image upgrade?

My Motorola doesn't seem to be making it past acquiring netwoek address. I tried making it priority by having modem connected to it, then network connected to Vonage box, but I could not access internet at all then (and no Vonage service). Now I have it plugged into my wired into the router and it is still not getting network address. I thought that should be pretty instant type thing.
    Any help out there?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

one warning guys. If you decide you don't like it for any reason, make sure you cancel during 8-5 on the weekday BEFORE the 30 day period. They have 24 hour service numbers but the cancelation department is only open 8-5 M-F. I spent three days trying to get through to them, long waits. When I did it was on day 31 and they kept $25. Canceled cause the wife insisted on transfering our number which Vonage couldn't (WV). That 25 bucks however lost them a customer for good.

We are on Sun Rocket now and are trying it out. If it passes muster we'll suign up for a year for $200. Oh and Sun Rockets rare to the Phillipeans is cheaper than Vonages too, and that's where my in-laws are.

If at first you don't succeed, deny you were trying in the first place.

        Jeff,

When you say network address are you saying that the vonage adapter is not getting an IP address. If that is the case can you tell me what kind of firewall you have in place? If you only have 1 IP from your ISP you might have to do this.

Well I couldn't get on here because the phone was blocking internet access so I couldn't get the replies. Called friendly local Vonage rep (in India) and got it all worked out. Sounds great. I needed it primarily for biz fax as I use unlimited minute cell phone for everything else.
          Thanks guys.

Currently there is no contract or 30 day trial or anything like that that I am aware of.

            .
I used to use my cell phone of everything else. I got vonage for work when I started WFH. Now I barely use my cell phone as I use vonage for all long distance in the house. Not only is vonage cheaper, I'm cancelling the cell phone and getting prepaid for $15 per month saving me another $20 per month.

I have acutally thought about getting the $24.95 plan with unlimited minutes but I just travel too much on the road. Now if I could get decent speed on my wireless system on my laptop and get a lighter plug in for the Vonage device . . . . LOL.
Plus I have unlimited minutes and a lot of my friends, family and work related are on the same network so all their calls to me are free.

I recently signed up for Sunrocket on a promotion for 1 year @ 199 including all taxes and fees, plus a bonus year free, (2 years = 8.29/month), with a 30 day trial. I just plugged their adapter in an open port on my router and the service came up in a few minutes. They have been running this bonus year offer around holidays. I was about to try Vonage when I heard a local radio computer pro mention that he had changed his own phone service from Vonage to Sunrocket (I was not aware of them), checked them out and came across this deal. Sound quality is as good as my ATT line. (I am on a cable ISP service)

Holy smokes. What a killer deal. How did you get the free extra year?

They have a 1 year annual unlimited plan for $199. They have been running a promotion for a second year free (buy one get one) around holidays. They ran it on Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, 4th of July, etc.. It just comes up on the Sunrocket.com homepage when they run it.

Actually another beauty of vonage is you can use it anywhere as long as there is high speed internet. You can take your vonage router and phone on the road and plug it into any DSL, FiOS, etc and you phone will ring if someone calls the number, anywhere.

Similiar to what Mike states below. My voicemail is actually emailed to me as an attachment and I can play them off my computer.

Find a neat trick with Sunrocket the other day. Not sure if Vonage has the same ability.

If you have a mic and speakers on your computer, you can make calls from your office or on the road as long as you can conect to their website (high speed only I bet, but it works from my office)

Also I can listen to my voicemails from anywhere, through the site.

I'm liking this more and more than traditional landlines.

Is it my imagination or did Vonage originally offer virtual numbers for free? Looks like theres a $10 activation and $5 / mo for that service... has it always been such??

                          Never met a bargain I didn't like.

I don't know but when I was checking out SunRocket I noticed it is free there. Plus their pricing is all inclusive, ie no taxes, no 911 fees, etc. Heck of a better deal. I emailed them about the 2 years for 1 deal to see if they would do it for me. I have not heard back from them yet.

                              SunRocket Customer

I have SunRocket. The service seems to work well.
I like the voicemail system. I can have a message sent to my email as a wav file. Additionally notifications of a voice message can be sent to other email accounts. This allows me to keep a record of messages even after my wife or I have checked them online. Also if your phone has the proper interface it will tell you if a message is unlistened to using a light or the phone display(mine does both)
You can have 1 extra number for free in a different area code. They call this a signature number.
I called customer service to try to arrange a toll free so anyone could call me free. Only restriction is it can't be a toll free exchange.
I also tried to get the 2 year for the price of 1 deal best I could do was 15 months for the 1 year price. Seems the 2 for deal comes out around holidays but is only for the first 1000 customers that sign up. (I wonder if anyone ever really got that deal?)
                              Opinions are like gas;
I don't mind hearing it, but keep it to yourself if it stinks.
