I think you've got that right, the cost of electricity would probably be more than the cost of the gas. That's one of the problems facing Hydrogen usage today. It takes more energy to produce it, than it would save. Of course if a better and cheaper means of producing electricity were had, then you might see some advantage. But then again, Hydrogen is rather explosive too, so maybe if they come up with a cheap way of producing electricity, then we would just run with that and forget about ignition-type fuels altogether.
If my memory serves me right (something it rarely does), I seem to recall reading an article about a new solar/electric substance that could just be sprayed on. Not only was it flexible, but it also worked with infrared, which, as I understand it anyway, is not something that current photo-voltaic coatings can do. Imagine, not only could you paint the roof of your vehicle with it, but you could also coat fabric with it. Gee, just think... your favorite jacket could be the electric supply for your cell phone or your MP3 player!
Like someone said in an earlier post, raise the price of gasoline and all kinds of "great ideas" pop up!
