    May I Introduce Nicholas

My youngest son and the woman he has been seeing told us a couple of weeks ago that they are going to get married. Sherry has 3 boys. Two are in their teens and their father is involved in their lives.

Her youngest is 3 and has no contact with his father. Sherry has brought Nicholas to the house several times. Not having had an adult male in his life, he is a bit shy and skittish around me. Time and patience will be needed to get him to warm up to me.

It's been a long while since we had one that age around and Mama had to bring something with him to play with. At an auction last week I found these and decided it was just what he needed. There are 2 more that had already made thier way out to the yard.

Now that's cool, Pappy. In 2-3 years you'll have him in the shed sanding and helping with projects.

That is great Pappy. It won't be long until Nicholas will be running to hug you everytime he sees you. You will love every minute of it.

Clamps and toy trucks ... you can't have too many of either. I predict lots of good times ahead for you two.

                Good on you, Pappy!

They are so much fun at that age.

                    Does he like power tools?

If he likes being in the shop as much as my nephew you two will have a blast. Give him some ear muffs and the shop vac. He'll warm right up to you.

                      Pappy,

I have a similar project, with one "step" grandson and one "birth" grandson. You'll realize early on that "personalities" seem to be formed while still in the womb, so to speak. Expose them to all the things you love and love them for all the things that they will expose you to. Together you will find a common ground that will bring you both a lot of joy. It can be challenging at times, but like anything worthwhile, it takes a keen eye, dedication, and an appreciation of each step along the way.

As a parent and as a grandparent, I've come to understand that there is never an "end result", only the joy and appreciation for the journey and countless smiles that accumulate.

Best wishes to you and your expanded family,

                      CWS

Pappy, just spend a little time with him in the shop building a few toys and other projects for him. (Kid-sized tables and chairs, and themed beds and other furniture are great project ideas, too.) He'll have fun, learn something, get lots of things, develop patience and a work ethic, and warm right up to you, too! Have fun!
...eight, nine, TEN! Yep! Still got all my fingers!

I'm convinced that Grandfathers are an important part of the childrens' development. You're engaged in a good work, Don. We're right proud of ya.

Pappy~ He's a strapping fine looking young boy. I have a 4 1/2 year old grand-son whom I'm planning on building bird houses and the like with this summer. My grand-son is very a much a typical little boy who loves to spend time with Poppa, so he's really looking forward to building those bird houses with me. Never make a promise you don't intend to keep with youngsters that age, cause you'd be surprised what kind of memory they have and how easily they get hurt. Having had 3 daughters, this little fellow is very special to us. Don't get me wrong, we love the other 3 grand-daughters just as much, but a boy is just different and love to copy what adult men do, epecially with power tools etc. Safety is a must, but with proper guidance and small tasks, he'll grow up to look up to you and will never forget what you taught him. Congrats sir, this is what life is all about......the legacy and knowledge you leave behind.
