    The Official Beer Thread

Two good ones this week. I make no apologies for being a beer snob.

JW Dundee Honey Brown. LOML got it by mistake for me. A good summer beer - light tasting with a slightly sweet finish.

Harp Lager. A little heavy for a summer beer but still pretty good. Almost too hoppy for me but has a nice roasty-toasty finish.

David, thanks for the suggestions. Now I've got two more I need to try. (so many beers so little time). I've been stuck with pale ales here for a while: Bass and Sierra Nevada. Both good enough to keep me from going on and exploring some more. But in the name of good beer I must do more research.

David: Those are almost real beers. Guiness is beer. All the others are just beer wannabees. I will concede fresh beer, not trucked, flown or otherwise shipped is almost as good as the black stuff.

I'm a big time beer snob. recently I've been drinking Firestone's beers. they are a local brewery, same family as the wine and tires.
Anchor's beers, especially porter and steam are excellent.
in general I love english style ales; especially porters and stouts. German beers I like dopplebocks and martzen.

A subject near and dear to my heart, drinking a Spaten Optimator as we speak.

As far as Anchor, one of my favorites. Can't go wrong with anything they make. Achor Liberty being my favorite and one you pale ale guys should try. Porter also excellent and Anchor Christmas is always a treat around the holiday.

For you Sierra Nevada fans, try the Celebration also around Christmas time.

But, I think my all time favorites are the Belgium beers. Corsendonk and Leffe being at the top.

If you want a real beer try Yuenglings lager or Black and Tan

I've had Yuenglings when visiting the east coast. it is not distributed in the west. good beer if you are a fan of lagers. I am more of an ale kind of guy.

Bert Grant makes some great beer. His "perfect porter" is perfect!
most any micro brew beer from the pacific northwest is good. for some reason portland and seattle are meccas for micro brew.

The Sierra's been a staple of mine for the last couple years, along with Newcastle Brown Ale. Then, in an effort to keep some of my beer dollars in town, I like Summit (Grand, Extra Pale, Northern Porter, etc.).

But lately, on the urging of a co-worker, I've been trying the Belgian beers. With names like Delirium Tremens, and Terrible, it's gotta be good! Talk about the champagne of beers....

A case of the DTs ain't cheap

                  Gives "terrible" a new meaning

I really liked that Corsendonk, too.

BTW, get a load of that alcohol content!

                  Regards,
                  Tom

I gotta post a vote for the Trappist Ales like Chimay. Especially the Grand Reserve. Short of that I'm with Brian, the Spaten Optimator is a superior brew. Amazingly enough a small brewery here in Texas has come out with a dunkel weitzen that is quite good as well. If any of you have access to Shiner, I highly recommend it.
I can only please one person a day ........

I used to travel to TX all the time, Shiner is a good beer. Sad thing is though that AB muscled their way in and the airport club I would go to before heading home couldn't sell it anymore. They had some Bud Bock, can't remember the name.

Yeungling is a good beer. I can get it and the Black & Tan down here. When I travel I try to get something I can't get at home - on our Minnesota trips Linenkeugel is my current favorite. One advantage to the package stores up there (as in PA and Jersey) is you get a much better selection of beer to choose from then you do here in NC.

I am into dark beers. My drinking list goes:
                            England/Scotland/Ireland:
                            Newcastle Brown.
                            Sam Smith Nut Brown
                            Black Douglas (hard to get)
Old Engine Oil (gives Guinness a major run for its money)
                            Guinness

                            Germany:
                            Spaten Optimator
                            Ayinger Dunkel
                            Warsteiner Dunkel
                            Kostritzer Schwarzbier
                            Erdinger Dunkel (my favorite)
                            DAB Dunkel

                            Belgium:
                            Corsendonk Brown Abbey Ale (YUM)
                            Delirium Nocturnum
                            Leffe Brune
                            Chimay Blue

                            Czech:
                            Velkopopovski Cherni Kozel
                            Staropramen Temne
                            Kruscovice Temne
                            Kelt
                            Gambrinus Dark
                            Austria:
                            Gosser Dark

                            Others:
                            Gosser Dark - Austria
                            Negra Modelo - Mexico
                            Trois Pistoles - Canada
Sam Adams Chocolate Bock - USA

Really, for a good mug of beer, you gotta hit Europe. A mug of fresh-brewed Kozel, enjoyed at an ancient pub in the heart of Old Prague on a summer afternoon... ahhhhh.
