    Close, but no cigar!!!

Having some time on my hands, I get the bright idea to tune up my 6" Rigid jointer (you can see how bored I was).

Replaced the cutters, removed some minor rust pitting on the beds, waxed the beds with pure carnuba wax (purchased for my car, used once, way too much work) re-aligned and dry lubed everything, set the knife hight using a magnetitic jig. I get everything as close to factory new (if Rigid had really good quality control) and then "THE DUMBS SET IN".

To acomplish all this requires removing the cutter guard, and I, like the the wise A** that I am, decide to run a test piece of Oak over the jointer. Before you can say stupid, I end up running my finger tips over the spinning head.

I am now typing this with 3 of my 4 fingers of my right hand wrapped in band-aids and All I could find were Pooney Tunes ones. The cuts aren't too deep, more like really bad paper cuts, but they hurt to to all get out and I now look as stupid as I am.

Luckly, the cuts are at the most superficial, but it coulf have been much worse.

Moral of the story, God made safety guards for a reason, USE THEM.

    I hate the nickname Lefty

Glad you weren't hurt too badly, Bruce. It is certainly an eye opener. Do you need me to design a Shark Guard for your jointer?

Not a bad idea, but forget the "easy on-easy off" crap!

Sorry you got hurt, Bruce, glad it wasn't any worse, Next time PUT THE GARD ON!

We're "short" a few fingers as it is, we don't need to loose any more.

Fortunately, the most serious injury was to your ego...

Not trying to hijack, but maybe this will make you feel better - I recently had a similar mishap with my Ridgid bandsaw.

I bought it used, and the previous owner had removed the blade guard from the exposed portion of the blade that runs up the left side of the wheels.

I thought, "no big deal, that's far away from the cutting action. I'll put it on later". Later never came. Long story short- I heard my 3 year old daughter scream in the yard, I starting to run for her, reached back to slap the off switch, and slapped the blade instead. Chewed up the end of my middle finger real good.

Maybe it's a Ridgid thing. Or Karma.

is right. When you said "papercut" I thought you had just touched the blade while it was at rest.

Sounds like you guys need to change tool brands. How about I hold onto your Rigid stuff while you heal?

When I ran the base hobby shop in Iwakuni, Japan a guy tapped me on the shoulder to get a tool for him just as I was running a board over the jointer. Got the end of my middle finger a little and a good chunk off the ring finger (almost to the bone).

Last thing I said to him (with the expletives deleted) was to clear his project out of the shop before I got back.

I have always waited to see someone come out with a woodworking tools brand called stubbs.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

                            Hey Bruce,
What were you (not thinkin?) Remember some time ago when people were calling me something like **** Thumb.
So we can't blame it on tool brands, mine was done on the ever-popular Ryobi BT3000 with a new 40 tooth blade.
Glad you weren't hurt too badly, and Bruce (BE CAREFUL).
