Houston Texans and the NFL draft

Hmmmm, I gotta wonder about the guys that run the NFL Texans team.

Passed over Reggie Bush OR Vince Young for a defensive end with the first draft pick?

I'm sure that Mario Williams is a fine player but it seems to me that
an offensive player of the caliber of those two guys can make a much bigger impact than any one defensive player.

Not that our offense or defense was very good last year accounting for the 2-14 record.

Oh well. Glad I don't have season tickets.

Mario Williams combined with their other picks so far seem like a good deal to me. My only thought is why, if they knew they would chose Mario, did they not try a trade of first round picks? They could have still gotten the same guys plus some others.

As a displaced Texan (in Oklahoma, of all places.../shudder/ ), I believe this was a good move.

The Texans ranked at, or near, the bottom of every defensive stat. You are not going to win very many games when the opposing team is scoring on you at will.

Yeah, Bush might be a "once-in-a-generation-player", but even average RB's can get you moving down the field with the right offensive line in front of them. An averege lineman, on the other hand, will get knocked around the field by the better linemen. You HAVE to grab the stud linemen when you have the chance and the Texans did just that. Williams could anchor that defensive line for 10+ years.

Remember too, Bush has never had to carry a team by himself. He also hasn't had to carry the ball 25-35 times a game either. Some wonder if he is ready for a full game of constantly pounding the ball.

I think I understand your train of thought, Loring. "Take the best player" seems like practical advice. That said, I've seen Mario play, and he's probably one of the best I've ever seen at his position. He just has a load of power, good moves, and instincts. I hated that, too, since I'm an East Carolina grad and fan. Then again, Reggie Bush also seems to have that Gale Sayers sixth sense, too.

I will say this: If Mario had worn a USC, Texas, Miami, etc. uniform during his college career instead of a NCSU jersey, a lot of critics wouldn't even be questioning the pick. Also: It wouldn't shock me if Bush ended up being a bust in the NFL. It's happened to quite a few overhyped Heisman types.

The best QB or RB in the world is still going to get killed if your line stinks.

              1. Had Bush not declared early, Williams was the number one pick. Only Bush coming out of USC changed that.

              2. Bush carried the ball more than 20 times in only three games in college.

              3. Defense wins games. 19 of the 32 players drafted in the first round were defensive playes.

              4. Anyone ever hear of a guy named "Deacon" Jones?
