    Tools On New Yankee Workshop

    All,

Had a quick question about the tools on NYW (this is not a technical question, or I would have posted it in Tool Talk). At the beginning of NYW, there are ads for both Delta and Porter Cable tools (longer ads, not just a quick screen flash). On today's episode (which covered wall bead-boarding, etc.), every Porter Cable tool he used (and I noted a BN125A and BN200A brad nailers, a PC pin nailer, as well as what looked like a 6" Saw Boss), the Porter Cable name was covered up with black tape. Does anyone know why that is ? Does it have something to do with the fact that it is on PBS (non-profit) ?

    Just Curious.

Yes he mentioned that in the interview a while ago. I guess they only get the advertising they pay for but you can pretty much tell who makes every tool he uses. But he did say he wont use a tool on the show if it doesn't work. Even though they get most of them free.

It's strange that I don't see this in the "This Old House" series. I was watching one the other day where the cabinet installers were using GREX brad nailers that were clearly marked as such. Maybe there's some legal mumbo-jumbo about if one of the hosts of the show actually use the tool it is considered "advertising", but if it one of the contractors they have on site they maybe do not have to follow these rules.

Seems to me, that part of the reason Bob Villa got fired was due to advertising for tools!
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Looks to me This Old House is no longer a PBS show. The site is retired and the new one is definately somewhat commercialized.

Should have been due to his level of expertise, or lack of!

This applies to the "stars" of the show as well, not just the no-name installers... I've seen Tom Silva using his fancy Festool (?) saw with the straight-edge guide that the saw runs on... IIRC, that's not covered in any way.

The TiVo picked up a Bob Villa show called "Bob Villa". It was sort of a This Old House by morons. Very funny. Looked like what would happen if a old known host, hired some college students as camera a tech people to shoot a show.

Tom Silva also uses a Festool cordless drill which has been used by the plumber too. Festools look nice but the prices.....

First of all, forgive me if this is old news, I ran across this web site some time ago. For those interested in Norm's tools, this site has a complete episode guide, and identifies most every tool used in each episode... I found it interesting.

All the new episodes are on PBS. The reruns are on several channels though.
