Thanks to everyone who tried to help

Earlier I posted that I needed help from any of the "computer gurus" from the site.

I wanted to thank all of you who tried to give advice to help. I tried most of the suggestions to see if I could get this computer to "straighten out and fly right." They helped, for a few minutes, but then the thing would "whack out" again. I'm still using Windows 98 SE for my operating system. Haven't had any problem with it, or my computer, for a year or so now, always been "rock solid."

Of course I'm not a "genious" when it comes to these things. But, about the only thing I didn't follow in the advice/suggestions was something about "problems concerning network/networking." I'm not on a network or tied into any such, my system to any other. If that is what you meant, but, like I say, I'm not sure of what the advice/suggestion meant.

Since I'm on the "high speed cable" I have anti-virus, a firewall, Spy-bot, adaware etc. I ran all of those and they all said that everything was fine.

Anywho, system still giving me fits, so first thing tomorrow she goes into shop to see what the heck is going on. Even tried reloading the "missing files" from my Operating System Disc and everything worked fine for 5 minutes and then she started going crazy again. Take it in and let the "pros" see what she needs.

Again, thanks to all who tried to help! Really appreciate it! I'm fairly new here and this is a great site. Really a bunch of great people on here. Hope I can help out, in someway, to any of those needing help in some way!

It sounds like the hard drive is starting to fail.....the intermittent loss of data and random loss of data suggests that possibility.

I have been using, building, repairing, fiddling with these things for years and have often struggled with Window 98 in any version. In most cases the problem seemed to be that some new software was installed or upgraded that would not play well with Win98. Years ago when MS decided to say that it would no longer support that OS it was no longer used in testing this new software. Things like antivirus software, Realplayer, and others just were not tested with Win98 to see if it was compatible. Even little programs like driver updates can be a problem these days.
I know you won't want to hear this but a move to WinXP would solve much of your troubles. I resisted the upgrade for a long time and can now say that I am happy I did. BTW, don't go for the upgrade version. That one still retains some of the Win98 stuff that has also been troublesome.
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

First off, I second the point about upgrading to XP, its a good OS, very stable. As far as not buying the upgrade version, I don't agree as you can do a clean install from an upgrade CD (you just have to put your Win98 cd in the driver when it asks for it). The files are the same on both version CDs, it just installs differently depending on how you do it. The price difference is large though. Whatever you do, do NOT let anyone talk you into "upgrading" to Windows ME. Trust me, that's not an upgrade.

The fact that you aren't on a network doesn't mean Windows didn't install network stuff. That's why the only thing you're seeing is some error messages. If you had been on a network you would be seeing more issues.

I'm sure the shop will get it sorted out quickly

You said you were on high speed cable. That IS Networking whether you share resources or not.
The errors you got indicate the network card drivers are messed up so you need to fix those networking related problems.
