Not gonna be able to get my fix

The Mrs. and I take off on vacation tuesday. The first real travel in a couple of years. We'll be flying out to Tahiti were we board the Tahitian Princess for 10 days cruisin the Tahitian islands. We'll have a laptop with us to download pictures from our camera but I don't think we'll have an internet connection. Guess I'll have a lot of catching up to do when we get back.

sounds like a fantastic trip. you just might be surprised about an internet connection on the ship - some do have them. although, that is a hardship i would gladly endure for a cruise around tahiti!!

Sounds like 10 days of pure heaven. We have talked about a cruise for an anniversary but it's in September...Hurricane season!

Those girls from Tahiti are something to see, especially when they leave their tops at home. Grab a couple of shots to post for us deprived individuals back home, but don't let LOYL catch you looking too close...
...eight, nine, TEN! Yep! Still got all my fingers!

                    tips on Internet while traveling

Some tips for internet use while on vacation/traveling

I did indeed use the internet while cruising last December. This was on the Princess lines. Other lines do have wireless internet on board but the policies are very different. Due to my parents cruise loyalty points they were entitled to use the internet room where they had computers - about 10, connected to the internet. I usually used them late at night it was crowded during the day. Actual speed was not that good, maybe that's why they prohibited or made impossible any activity other than browsing. Of course, that's to be expected, since a satellite connection is the only way it can be connected.

If not for the loyalty program, it would have been $20 for 30 minutes or so - too expensive for me. They also had wifi wireless accounts for around the same cost but limited to the nearby lounge area. But Not free to me.
The computers in the internet room (used to be the card room until recently remodeled apparently) ran some proprietary system you had to swipe your room/charge/ID card to charge your room. it had a proprietary browser but no mail clients. It ran the web mail server horribly - took me forever to read/delete mail and it also would not allow uploading/downloading/media etc. Very disappointing in any case but would have been much moreso had I actually been paying. Maybe the wifi would have been better (use your own client) but like I say would have actually cost me.
So cruise ships have a way to go although they are definately on-line now.

On port calls however, you have the option of going to internet cafe's which provide coffee, and pastries as well as much more reasonable internet rates, usually using their computer and or wifi with your computer. Most big cities have these, many small cruise ports also have them for both the passengers and crew to contact home.

If you stay in a hotel, there are many hotels that now have free wired or wireless internet. I think you can do a search on the internet there are websites that keep track of these. The cheap mariotts - Courtyard and Fairfield provide them, but often the more expensive brands will charge $10-20 per night. Some hotels have free internet on a computer in their lobby, or business center. Others charge. Sometimes if you ask politely about using the internet, the desk clerk will slip you an unused or partially used access card someone left behind. You might do the same if you pay for several days and don't use it all.

Of course if you are at your company's local facility while travelling, then you can usualy connect to their network and access the internet as well as your company facilities.

                    Good luck!
