    Funny Phone Conversation

This afternoon I called the guy that does drum sanding for me. He was out of town for the week, so I called around and got the name of a mill that does drum sanding in town. Called them up and a woman answered. The conversation went like this:

Me: "A friend told me that you guys do drum sanding."
Her: "I'm new here, let me check.

    A few seconds later...

Her: "We don't do drum sanding but they will do tuba sanding for you."
    Me: "What?"

I hear laughter in the background...

Her: "Oh, they say they will do congas"

She finally realizes that the guys in the shop are playing a trick on her and she hands the phone over to the shop foreman.

    Gave me a good laugh.

Reminds me of when I worked as an electrician and sent newbies for the infamous pipe stretcher.

And then there was when I was in aircraft maintainence (military) and would send slick sleeves to the hangar for 50" of flight line (to tie something down). Or to clean a really dirty part? Well. a gallon of prop wash (or jet blast if they have it) of course!

Yeh, it's tough on a rookie.

I once was training a young assistant public defender and she was going to sit first chair for the first time. She was wound up tighter than a drum the days before trial, so I slipped a phone message into her in-box. It read: Mr. Lyon is an eye witness to the crime and has important information. Please call ASAP. The message looked like it was from her client.

When she called the number, a voice was heard to say, "Good morning, Sanford Zoo. How may we direct your call?" Now most people would have realized that their chain was being yanked. Not her, she was so stressed, she proceeded to ask for Mr. Lyon. She was then told he couldn't come to the phone until they let him out of his cage. Still not grasping the situation the attorney tried to get further information. The woman on the other end of the phone took pity and said, "Honey, you know your having your leg pulled. This is the zoo, all our lions are in cages."

We used to send noobs out to the motorpool for a can of spark, or a fan belt buckle. At work all of my new inspectors get indoctrinated when they ask me how to tell if a part is passivated, I say with a straight face to lick the part and if it tastes like strawberries it's passivated. So far it's worked

I was in a Communication co. & everything is numbered, & lettered as for parts & tools. I would send the new guys Out to get me a T.R. double E., it would sometimes take a day before they realized a TR double E is a Tree! All comedy comes from tragedy, somebody has to get the pie in the face.

                    Around here....

I ask the new lighting kids to go find the Surprise Pink gel (gel is used to color the light that comes out of the big hot stage lights). Eventually they come back and tell me that Surprise Pink is actually purple. I tell them that's the surprise. Then I send them to find Surprise Blue. After they spend an hour looking in the pinks, I tell them it's really blue. That's the surprise.

And, to my shame, I've sent more than one Boy Scout looking for a smoke shifter....

                        More on sanding.

I have often wondered who it is that sands all the beaches?

You guys are absolutely cruel to new guys aren't you? Were you at least ashamed of yourselves?
I have never asked a new guy to go get me a can of valve closer, a box of welding spark supressors or a metric cresent wrench. Well not more than once for each new guy anyway.

Along with the smoke shifters, let us not forget sending Scouts for a bacon stretcher. Or the all time classic, a snipe hunt.

                            ritualistic hazing - now outlawed

Ahhh yeah... the good ole days of hazing the booters...let's see, we had the "Mail Buoy Watch" (where we dressed them up in ridiculous outfits in order for them to hook the "mail buoys" that were dropped with our mail in them - yup, they fell for that), the mysterious "Sea Bat" that was captured by the Bosun Mates(when in reality it was an empty box, with LOTS of theatrics, that when they bent over to look in they got a swat across the bottom with a straw broom - those tricky Bosuns), putting them on the charlie-golf-uniform-eleven (c-gu11) or bravo-one-romeo-delta (b1rd) watches (usually in the hottest day or darkest night), sending them to see the Boiler Techs for a BT (Boiler Tech, get it?) punch to get a broken pin out, changing the batteries in the sound-powered headsets (think about it....you'll smile) and numerous searches for coordinate bearing grease, Captain's Gig line, mess line, flight line and the computer's bit bucket (parallel and serial), among many many other things.

Got caught by two of these myself...many years ago.

Reminds me of what we used to do with new people at my dad's bakery. During the mornings, peak busy time, my dad would hand the cookie (what we called new workers) a 5 gallon bucket and tell them to go to the proofer box (high humidity cabinet for making bread rise) and get a bucket of steam.... :-) They would almost be at the proofer and he'd yell out "Don't forget the cover to the bucket!". Well if we weren't in stitches by that time, you'd see them reaching for a cover. Too funnny!
