    Another Poofteenth?

Rod started this "pooftenth" business and Norm brought it to visible light.

I went over to my woodworker friends house last night for a visit and looked in his work room. Low and behold - Poofteenth ribbons all over the place. Almost like fine silk stockings [8D]

Cheap caliper but as near as I can figure about 1/4 of .01 inch which I think is .0025.

What are you showing the guy's stockings for? This is a woodworking site.

That's the mystical kind of smoke-thin shavings that I can only dream about when sharpening my plane-irons. They can't be more than a cell or two deep!

This was a challenge I couldn't pass up.

I went into the workshop, selected a new Ryobi blade and fitted it to my BT3000.

I tuned the saw to the nth degree, ensuring 100% parallelism between blade and rip-fence.

I sprayed the blade with PTFE and waxed the rip-fence and table top. I polished the LeeMade ZCTP until it shone.

I set the fence so close to the blade that air molecules between the teeth and the fence provided the only lubrication. Using the Micro-positioner, I 'nudged' the fence closer still.

I then selected a piece of poplar, set it on the saw and started cutting shavings off it.

Here is a picture of the shaving I took. It's balanced on the blade between the two washers :

The shavings were so delicate that six crumbled away as I was moving them.

The one I managed to move successfully is so thin that I can't measure it with any micrometer I have.

In fact, it's too thin to see!

I wish I could! Those 'see-through' shavings are a testimony to both the sharpener's and the user's art.

          AtH - yeah, sure!

IMHO if "it's too thin to see" it doesn't count

When I told Maeno what I was going to do with the shaving, he laughed. Then seriously, he said: come back next week AFTER the blade has been sharpened! He is going to give me a dovetail lesson next week too. He gave me a few tips when I picked up that shaving above.

I'll post his techniques as I learn them.

What finish did you use ???

Attila, you need a better camera. Apparently your sharpening skills have exceeded your electronics capability, 'cause I can't see a thing!
