My Solution to a Stopper Problem

I have been using the Woodcraft 822942 Botle Stopper kit with their 822945 mandrel. I drill a 6mm hole for the mandrel and turn the stopper using a live center in the tail stock. After parting off the end I have found that the mandrel doesn't hold on some woods.

I picked up a 1/4-20 connnector and installed the 1/4-20 rod into the blank with a drop of CA. I then screwed the rod exiting from the blank into the connactor, the other end of the connector was screwed onto the mandrel.

Hope the attached pictures will make it clearer.

This shows the mandrel with the 1/4-20 coupler

This shows the unfinnished stopper on the lathe.

This shows the stopper off of the lathe with stain applied but not finishied.

I have had the same problem Dick. That's a great solution. I will have to give that a try.

I sometimes have the opposite problem: In very hard woods like bloodwood I had a very hard time getting the completed stopper of the mandrel.

Never occurred to me that the threaded rod could be unscrewed from the stop... Great idea! Any special place to get the the 1/4-20 coupler?

I picked it up at Lowes when I got the parts for my jam chuck. You will find them in the wall of sliding bins.
