Turning A Walking Stick

My sister needs to use a cane at times. I am thinking of replacing her Wallmart cane with a walking stick.

I have two 18" pieces of Cocobolo and figured on doweling them together with a Maple spacer since I can't match the grain. I haven't decided on the top but again probably a maple spacer and then the top.

I don't want to use an ugly rubber crutch tip on the bottom. Any suggestions?

What about a brass tip? Brass should be "soft" enough to not to mess up floors and stuff, but might wear faster outside.

If collapsability would be useful, you could use a threaded insert.

Monte's tip suggestion is a good one (I find this type of tip on my hiking stick very useful), but I do agree that it probably wouldn't make it through airport security.
