I thought that I'd have a try at using colour in my turnings, so I mounted a stock sycamore blank and away I went. The result is shown below:
The bowl is 305mm (12") in diameter and 100mm (4") tall. The "internal bowl" is 190mm (7.5") across. Finished with diluted Sanding Sealer, followed by Danish Oil. The underside was completed, then the bowl was reversed onto a dovetail recess. The rim was trued up, then the spirit stain was applied and allowed to dry (lunchtime!). The bowl was then hollowed out, with a slightly undercut internal rim and a radiused external rim.
I used sycamore as I thought that the light colour would contrast well with the green. The green didn't turn out quite as dark as I'd hoped, but I had to start somewhere.
Whilst (just for Ken!) it's not the most perfectly proportioned bowl, I'm quite pleased with my first attempt to use colour. The thing to do now, I guess, is to resist the temptation to go mad with it!
