    Couple of bowls

Not a lot of time for me on the lathe - helping my son with his project at the moment. These are two that I've managed to squeeze in. I still work pretty slowly [:I]

The first is maple, about 6" x 2".
The second is 'mystery wood' that my daughter picked up alongside the road while we were walking (she gave me half ). It looked like a piece of firewood. Suspect that it is fir, but I'm NO good at identifying wood! Also about 5" dia. Started out about 50% taller, then underwent a mandatory design change.

Both were finished with shellawax. I'd like to try something different, though, as I gave the maple piece to a friend who washed it. All the finish came off, and she brought it back to me to 'fix'. Suggestions are MOST welcome!

    Thanks for looking.

Nice work! She gave you half A true turner in the making
I usually us Deft lacquer on my turnings. For the salad bowls I've made I use a salad bowl finish, go figure Tell you friend not to put them in a dishwasher or let them soak in water. Rinse off and dry by hand.

Very nice. I especially like the second one, it's a very pleasing design. Good job.

For a really bomb-proof finish - and with a very high gloss - it's difficult to beat Rustins two-part clear. Go to http://www.rustins.co.uk/ click on "Interior Finishes" then "Plastic Coating" for details.

Don't know whether it's available over there, but I'd guess that it is. It will resist practically everything you can throw at it.

Brushed on, it "self-levels" - apply the second coat within two hours after any de-nibbing (seldom required). Leave it for at least 24 hours after that, then use their Burnishing Cream to really bring up the shine or 0000 steel wool to satinise it. HTH

          Ray.

P.S. Very nice bowls - well done!

Nice looking bowls, Karen. I like the second one best but I'd take either one.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I like the second bowl better, too.

Ray and Jim, thanks for the finishing suggestions. Looks like I have two new ideas to try!

A good finish for salad bowls id just plain old walnut oil. You can get it in the supermarket or woodcraft now sells the "Mahoney utility finish" for $9.00 in 16 oz container. I agree with the others, a handmade wooden salad bowl should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER be put in a dishwasher as the heat cycle could crack it. They should never be soaked in water either.

                  Both are very nice bowls.

Thanks, Mudder. I asked how the bowl was washed, and she said she just 'dipped it in dishwater very quickly'. Wonder how much detergent she used! The bowl was so fuzzy it had to be re-sanded as well as refinished.
