I Completed a Couple Projects Today

I closed the office at 1PM today and headed home, with an accident on the freeway it took me an hour rather than 20 mins.

I had started a table for my center drilling vice to fit my new DP and finished that. After that I had to try it out and drill a blank for a Polaris kit that I couldn't do on my bench top.

The Polaris pen is cocobolo finished with 2 coats of Mylands sanding sealer and then 2 coats of Behlens turners finish.

Nice pen! What do the hold-downs on the sides of the center drilling vise? Are they to clamp the vise down to the base plate?

Nice setup Dick. I also like the Polaris. I have not tried one of those yet.

I like the pen blank holder. I am tired of building jigs and need a ready made one. Good looking pen too!

I realy like the Polaris kit, it's hefty and doesn't interupt the grain pattern with a center band.

I used toggle clamps to hold the drilling vice so I can take it off when needed, if the clamps are in the way of what I need to drill loosening 3 1/4" bolts removes the table.

A center vise has been on my 'want' list for a while too. I guess what bothers me a little about the design is this: I like to have something under the blank to help control tear out. But once you used the center vise to drill something with a larger diameter drill, it will not support the bottom of blanks to be drilled with smaller diameter drills anymore.

Maybe a solution would be to mount the vise on a wooden base with a recess in the middle, and have scraps in the recess. That way one could put in a new piece of scrap when moving to a smaller diameter.

The vice comes mounted on the phenolic base you see in the picture. I cut a piece of scrap whatever to size and place it under the blank.
