    I've been busy!

Recently, I made a trip to my wood supplier and came back with a good haul - Cedar of Lebanon, spalted beech, sycamore and alder. Here is the result of a morning's bandsawing (I just love my bandsaw!):

On the left, the Alder blanks, next to them the Cedar of Lebanon. In the foreground are some Sycamore blanks, with one spalted beech on the top. Most of the blanks are a little over 300mm (12") in diameter and the average cost per blank is less than £3.00 - definitely the way to buy wood!

Here's the first effort from an Alder blank:

It's 280mm (11") in diameter, 65mm (2.5") tall, finished with sanding sealer and wax.

Here's the first Cedar of Lebanon result, from one of the smaller blanks:

This one is 190mm (7.5") diameter, 90mm (3.5") tall and has an undercut rim - also finished with sanding sealer and wax.

    Ray.

The wood pile is very nice, the turnings are beautiful. I love that Cedar of Lebanon.

Boy! I wish I had the time to cut that much, and turning will take even longer. But I can dream! Have fun!

I really like the cedar figure. Is it really from Lebanon, or is that just the species? If so, where's it grown? Also, what's that circular spot a little left of center on the back inside face of the cedar bowl? Seems to overlap what is otherwise the basic grain of the wood.

                  David,

It's the species name for Cedrus Libani, locally grown but apparently first found on the Mount Lebanon range at Sannine, Barouk (more details at http://www.tanbourit.com/lebanon_cedars.htm if you're interested).

The spot is part of the natural figure, probably caused by the slope of the inside. One of the attractions of this wood for me is the sometimes wild and unexpected patterns that emerge.

Ken, whilst () I also like the color and appearance of the Cedar, I'm also impressed with the Alder - it's a delight to turn and offers some surprising colors once you get into it. It doesn't give off the wonderful aroma of the Cedar, though.

The previous piece of Cedar of Lebanon I bought from the same supplier had been stored in a pig shed for fifteen years after it had been felled, yet it still retained its beautiful smell - that's impressive!

He's soon going to deal with a huge tulip tree and I've persuaded him to cut me a slab or two, rather than just board it all. That should be spectacular with all the colors the wood contains.

                  Ray.
