My poor wife had a bad allergy attack this weekend that pretty much laid her out. She has done little but sneeze and sleep as well as complain about her headache. Being the caring person that I am I of course asked what I could do for her. Well she told me the best thing would be if I stayed out in the shop so I would not make noise. Now some guys may get there feelings hurt from a statement like that but not me! I forced myself to stay out in the shop and turn!
While at Rocklers yesterday I picked up the new Sorby 3 piece mid-size hollowing set so I went about testing these tools out on some different woods. I also tried some different forms and shapes.
This first piece is Claro Walnut with a Bethlehem Olive Wood finial.
This next piece is from some wood I picked up in Austin. The sticker on it says Desert Something, I cant make out the rest of the name. Very dense but not as hard as Iron wood. Quite wormy though and the grain color runs from pink to light brown. I added bloodwood for the lip and then made the lid out of bloodwood and the finial out of the same base wood.
While still have the bloodwood on the saw I decided to cut another piece and make a little goblet in the same basic shape as the Walnut box. I kind of liked that shape once I was done with it.
And I have a bit of a wood gloat, seems my son has come across a bunch of fresh cut Pecan logs about 20” across and 4’ lengths. He is supposed to be picking me up several logs.
Anyhow tell me what you think of my new designs and thanks for having a look.
