    Its not a pen

    Today after browsing through Richard Raftan's book on turning(actually just looked at the pictures), I decided to make something other than a pen on my lathe. I had a big block of oak that I cut up a bit on the bandsaw and gave it a go. Thats a quarter in the foreground for scale. Now I am really hooked.

      It looks good.
      I turned a couple recently and am hooked as well, I need to buy some new tuning tools though. Who doesn't.

          Nice work! What finish did you use on that oak? I got a bit of oak to, and am not happy with the finishes I tried so far.

              I wet sanded with mineral oil at 600 grit, then used EEE polishing compound. Then a little Hut crystal coat, followed by some Buthchers bowling alley wax. The more I struggle with finishes, the more I have realized I get the best results by using the minimum finish. The secret is in the sanding, Let the beauty of the wood come through.

                      Real pretty bowl, Bruce. It's hard to decide which addiction is worse, woodworking or woodturning.
                      Your finish is very tastefull, in my humble opinion, wood has beauty enough on it's own, so let it show!.
