    Raising burr on scrapers

I am having a hard time raising a nice burr on my round nose scraper. I have a Crown burnisher (polished HSS). My problem is controlling the burnisher, it is just so 'slippery'. Any tricks to it?

I am considering building a jig where the burnisher sticks out or a board at the right angle. That way I could just have the scraper flat on the board and use both hands to guide it against the burnisher.

The bur that is created during sharpening on the grinder should be sufficient. Generally when I create a bur on a cabinet scraper it is necessary to use steel that is harder then the steel you are creating the bur on. I have an old square screw driver that works nicely for this. Veritas out of Canada makes a little jig for putting a bur on scrapers and it is available at Woodcraft.

You want to be careful with a bur on a turning scraper though, too much and the tool becomes grabby and difficult to control. Personally I will only raise a bur on a turning scraper if I am trying to remove a lot of wood and I need the tool to be more aggressive than normal. Otherwise I always knock the bur off with a diamond hone right after grinding as I tend to use scraper more for inside work for a finish cut.

Thanks Ken, I'll experiment and observe how the tool handles under the various conditions.
