    Eucalyptus Burl

Rockler had a special on Australian turning wood, and a block of Eucalyptus Burl caught my eye. I knocked the corners off, and to get a feel for the wood I used one of them to turn a pencil. Moisture-content apparently was still fairly high, that made it very nice to turn. The drying gave the wood a lot more texture, which in combination with the voids gives the pencil a very nice feel.

Then I went on to the 'main course' and turned a vase. When hollowing out the inside released a pretty strong vinegary scent.

The wood machined to a very nice surface. All I did was sand it down with micro mesh, no finish was used! The pencil was turned a few days ago, but I just turned the vase earlier today, so I do not know yet how drying will affect shape or surface.

    This was a fun project!

Thanks all! For a burl with such voids it was surprisingly easy to work with, probably the moisture. The vase does not appear to be changing it's shape or surface much.

Beautiful work, I have only used stabilised euclyptus burl, for a pen. It seemed very hard, I guess I will keep my out for some green stock.

            Thanks for posting the pic.
