    HF #45276 14x40 Lathe question

    One of the guys here at work is goign to sell his HF 45276 lather with stand, 3 or 6 (he can't remember) jaw chuck and a set of cheep turning tools.

    What would be a good offer or should I just run away quickly?

    Depends what kind of chucks it is. If it is the one they show as an accessory for it I would pass and get the 34706 instead. On second thought it might be a good learner for $50 or so. IF the spindle threads are a common size like 1x8. The web page doesn't say.

      Like Jim said, check the spindle. One of HF's models, I think it's that one, is 3/4 X 16 tpi, a very 'unique' choice, making common chucks not compatible. I sold mine for $50 and was happy to include a cheap set of HF turning tools and be rid of it. I did tell the buyer about the ******* spindle thread. There is a hard to find adaptor available for around $40. A 3/4 X 10 tpi or 1 X 8 I believe are the most common spindles.

        If you look closely at it, it looks very much like the strange lathe the Tribalwind had not to long ago. Everything was non-standard on it. It also looks very flimsy. The bed appears to be bent steel instead of cast iron. I think I would be cautious.

          Yeah he has mentioned that the bed is a bit flexible.
          I was thinking I could weld in a back brace but the non standard parts make it more of a pain than it's worth.
