When I scored some Oak from a neighbor, I got curious and also took some wood that came right from where the big roots go into the tree. It is real light and a bit spongy, so i did not have high hopes. It teared pretty bad while turning, but sanded easily.
The vase below is just under 4" tall, and I cheated, it is only partially hollowed (first time use of a hollowing tool and I did not want to loose this one). My niece likes origami and made the 'flower'.
