Small Walnut Spaceship Box (therapy session)

Wifey just totaled out the family wagon and is 8 1/2 pregnent w/ICP. So daddy needed some therapy the other night. I just picked up some really nice walnut and decidied to turn a little box for my sisters birthday coming up.

The bottom 1/2 of the box along the end grain edge of the lip is torn a little and not quite as smooth as I'd like. Any pointers on how to clean that up would are welcome.

Nice looking box Bill. Thanks for putting the battery in for size comparison.

Nice piece I very much like the form.

The end grain looks to have sanding dust in the pores of the wood as opposed to actual tearout.
I suggest removing the finish, blow the sanding dust out of the end grain - may need to resand - wipe down with mineral spirits [A light wipe with mineral spirits [paint thinner] will REVEAL every little bitty tiny weany dinky flaw in the piece BEFORE actually applying a finish] and refinish the piece.

For the future sharp tools and dust removal between grits are key to a good finish.

Rus Fairchild has written a How to finish turned wood piece. You may find some of it helpful. I certainly did.

I love walnut, and one thing that is if you are going to make a cross grain cut like that I will cut it a little shy from finished. Then apply sanding sealer. Let it dry before making the final cut. THat way the grain will be more firmly supported and you end up with less tearout. Unfortunately it takes more time but....

The low profile is different. I like it!
