    Turning is Mind Altering!

Yesterday I had no time on the lathe at all. As I said in last weeks post I have been working on a table/cabinet that will serve as an out feed table for the BT as well as a workbench. Well of course while working on it yesterday I decided to change my plans in mid project and turn it into a router table also.

So off to Rockler we went to gather some necessities needed for this project like the router plate, miter track and T-track. My wife has a new rule that anytime we go to a “Guy” store we must also go to a “Girl” store! [V] Well that did not work out as planed because we ended up going to many girl stores. I protested this and made the point that the deal was one for one and her response was “Oh please, you owe me so many trips to girl stores for all the times I went to guy stores already” [:0] Out of the clothes stores and show stores and other places I was forced to go and just stand around we went by Kirklands and Stienmart as well as a few other stores that sell nick-knack house wares. The thing that I found interesting is that I was examining all the vases, goblets, pottery and so on. I was looking at the form and proportions thinking, oh I would like to turn that, or that form is not proportional and looks awkward.

I now have several new ideas for turnings and there proportions, so I would suggest that a trip to such a store is not a bad idea for a turner to gain ideas and inspiration. I saw so many things out of glass and other materials that I would like to turn out of wood that I have to admit I enjoyed that part of the shopping. Now the shoe stores on the other hand…

I haven't got the equipment (lathe) set up to evolve into a turner yet but I tend to look at the shelves, boxes, shadow boxes, etc. in places we go. Sometimes an idea forms, most times a feeling of disbelief that anyone would pay for the level of (or lack of) workmanship sold.

Didn't I tell you before that sawdust is NOT cocaine for woodworkers? Now cut it out! [}]

I was starting to get worried reading your story about the guy debating with the wife about the old "toys tools vs. shopping for women folk" just before valentines day. I was thinking the worst but it looks like it turned out OK. Whew! I thought we would have to start a red-neck rescue! Stand down fellow red-necks.

Now about the mind altering part, since starting turning I look at wood much differently now. I wish I had a portable chain saw to take with me on business trips! Case and point!

Pappy, I pretty much ran into the same thing with furniture. I think the one that finally pushed me over the edge and started me into making our furniture was the entertainment center I had bought. This particular piece was oak and I paid about $900 for it on sale. When I got it home and started the assembly I found what I had paid for was oak trim and a very thin oak veneer. Under that was the worst particle board I had pretty much ever seen. It was very much like a $40 piece from Wal-Mart.

Mudder, I know man! But it is the exotics that get me!

Scott, I really don’t mind going shopping with her but it is never just one store or even two. It always ends up being an all day quest!
