    Walnut bowl

Absolutely gorgeous weather here today, 60 degrees and sunshine, so took my lathe outside on the driveway. At any rate, here's my second try at a bowl: walnut, 4.25" dia x 2" tall. Thanks for looking!

Wow, Karen! That's beautiful!!! What type of tool did you use to hollow out the bowl? It looks perfect!

        That is fantastic!

I spent the day finishing the insulation project on my shop. Looks like I can get back to turning now.

That does look great Karen. Nice finish on that piece. Did you decide on a method to finish the bottoms?

Very pretty! I love working with Walnut and always keep a piece around. It is my wife’s favorite wood. I have noticed that a lot of turners will not use it as they consider it hard to turn but it looks as though you have no problems.

Great job on the turning. Is it just one bowl or a bowl and a plate? It gives the appearance of the later.

Thank you for all the kind comments [:I] I still have a LOT to learn. Never knew turning could be this much fun!

Den, I used a 1/2" round nose chisel to scrape out the inside.

Dave, Steve and Joe, I used EEE Ultrashine and Shellawax, then repeated the process.

Bob, I'm still working on the bottoms. The first bowl I 'cheated' and covered the bottom with felt. I hadn't left enough of a tenon when I finished, then when I separated it from the waste block, the bowl chipped. While I was in the process of parting this one off, the paper joint began to come loose. I ended up using a chisel to cut and scrape the remaining tenon away, then sand and finish. Not a perfect bottom, but better than the felt. I'm going to try to make a disk compression chuck before I make another bowl so that I can turn it around on the lathe.

Jeff, it's one bowl with a short pedestal base. But a plate and bowl . . . hmmm. Maybe next time

Ken, I don't know if walnut is hard to work with, or not. Figure my technique makes it more difficult, and it's part of the learning curve. I did put my skew AWAY after I tried it and got a couple of nasty catches. I didn't want the bowl to explode before I got a chance to see what it looked like [B)]

Dick, glad you got your insulation done so that you can get back to the fun!
