    What a weekend!

    I have been so busy that I could hardly sleep so I got up around 4:30 A.M. and hit the shop at 5:30. I really wanted to finish that Sofa Table for the wife this weekend so she can go about her plans. I did however manage to do some turning while I waited for the various finish coats to dry. It takes two hours between coats so I had about an hour and 45 minutes of turning time in between coats and I applied a lot of coats! (Finished table in finished projects section)

    The first this I ran into was a surprise that I encountered while cutting the stock for my drawer faces. I came across this area of spalting in my Walnut!

    The funny thing is that not too long ago I would have cut this section off and discarded it but instead I got rather excited about it! Yep you guessed it, it became a pen!

    I also got to make a box. This is made from Maple Burl with a Ebony decoration on the top.

    I received an email recently from a lurker here. That seems to happen quite often, I don’t know why these people don’t want to get into the discussions as this is the friendliest place I know of. In any case the question was “Why don’t I ever show the inside of my boxes? Did the insides look bad?” Well no, not really I just thought that was too many pictures of the same thing but anyhow here is the inside of the box.

    I also got a request from the wife as I was on my way back out to the shop, she asked if I was going to go turn something and I said yes. She then asked me if I would turn her a small bowl as she had a use for it. I said ok, no problem and was on my way when she yelled “Not too fancy!” Well humph on that! So I managed to turn a simple form but I used Big Leaf Maple Burl so I am thinking that I win!

    Inside view of bowl;

    It has indeed been a productive weekend and I am about worn out. Thanks for taking the time to look.

        Fantastic work, Ken, here and on the table. That maple burl is beautiful wood! Now for another newbie question: what part of the spalting do you use when you turn? All spalted, mostly clear with a spalted edge . . .? I look at the walnut, and I sure don't see where the pen came from!

          Karen,
          The pen came from the light streak going up the right side of the board.

            That was a great idea to use the spalting area for a pen. Looks good.

                That "simple" bowl is very nice Kenneth. The box and pen ain't bad either. Hope I'll get some time to turn soon.
