    A few boxes

    I have made a few boxes lately but nothing real dramatic as the shop inspector made me do a full cleaning. Nothing like Rod’s shop but I can see the floor and everything is put up in its place. Kind of strange being able to walk around out there. She also decided that she wanted her sofa table finished or no more lathing till it was so I have been spending a lot of time on it. I am on the sanding sealer now and hope to be able to put a finish next weekend. On the plus side I have been able to lathe while waiting for glue and sealer to dry.

    This first one is Canary with a Bubinga finial;

    This is Marimba and I was able to design around the orange stripe to show it off I think;

    This is Curly Maple;

    Anyhow, thanks for having a look.

    As usual, Ken, your work is fantastic! I really like the subtle contrast of the finial on the canary wood. The shape of the marimba follows the detail wonderfully - makes it look like any other shape would look awkward. Great beading on the curly maple, too. Really adds interest to it! How do you determine your proportions for your boxes? Is is a rough 'formula' or do you strictly eyeball what looks good to you?

      You know, I spend an afternoon at the lathe, and maybe come up with a couple of Pens. This guy turns the above while waiting for some glue to dry... I am sure Mudder will have the right words for this

      But don't get me wrong: I enjoy every minute at the lathe. And after all, I am a sport turner: Catch and release!

      Nice work Ken!

        Very nice Kenneth,

        One problem though.......

        That Curley maple one infringes on one of my patented designs, So I'm going to send you my address and you can just send it right to me to avois the lawers and courtroom battles that are sure to ensue.

        Is it working?

        Did'nt work on the other guy I tried it on either.

        Nice work Ken.

          Very nice Ken I too like the proportions on the curly maple.

            Thanks for the nice comments on my work. Karen, I wish there was some kind of formula for solving for proportions, some rule of thumb or other method. When I was in college I took several art courses that talked about such things in paintings and sculptures but that does not seem to help too awful much. What I do at this point is turn a piece of wood round and then I look at it. The wood pretty much will tell you what shape to turn it. If the grain is rather plain then I decorate it quite a bit with beads and such to make the piece more visually interesting. When I look at my earlier boxes and other turnings now I see so many problems with the shapes that it encourages me to try different things.

                So the wood is talking to ya huh, Think you need a vacation buddy. You should just send me all those turning tools and equipment.

                Nice boxes, for some reason the bottom one really stands out to me, I really like it. keep up the great work!
