    A few bowls from today

Finally had time to chuck up a couple blanks and take a look inside.

The first one is some of the spalting ficus I have setting under my lathe, from a neighbor's tree that had to come down. None of this spalting is evident from the unturned blank. Tears out like crazy, needs SHARP tools and a good bit of sanding. I have more, but always struggle with whether to bother knowing the difficulties... but then again, it was free, and I like the spalting.

The second bowl is from California Peppertree taken down by an arborist friend of mine. This warm brown color wasn't visible from the unturned blank, but came out strong with a little BLO. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful work! I love the surprise that is inside of wood when turning bowls or pens.

Thanks for the encouraging words Bade & Hank. I am enjoying the journey, the process seems to make more sense each time - so I'm hoping that means my skills are improving. And as long as the wood is free or cheap...

          Nice work Bill,

Having never tried turning before I think I a lathe may be in my future later this year.

My first comment was swallowed... Very nice work! Spectacular wood, and I like the details on both bowls.

Thanks Jon, Gerd & Mark. The ficus bowl is 6x3.75in, and the peppertree is 7x3in. I'm hoping to try something larger next; I have some big blanks from ash waiting, just need to find the time and decide on what shape to try next...
