    I thought I'd give a YoYo a try

Months ago I ordered a YoYo kit and finally found some time to play with it..

What kicked it off was finding a Purple Heart plank in the off cut bin at my local wood store yesterday.

I started by cutting it into triangles to minimize end grain then segmenting it with some Cocobolo (I think) from my mystery off cut box.

Lots more work to do but I had a question.

Should I finish with CA or a wipe on poly?

CA usually will make the colors of the purple heart more vibrant than poly, unless the poly is waterbased, in which case it will probably be close to the same in color. If you use oil based poly, the yellowing effect will tint the purple heart a tad.

The wipe on I have is oil based.. I got it to get that yellowing effect on a Sycamore piece I made.

Thanks for the tip on Purpleheart.. CA and a high gloss finish it is then.

        I'm a funny sort..

I noticed that the oils in CA accelerator are great for giving the grain some depth so I like to wipe down the parts with accelerator on a towel then apply the CA finish after it sits for a few minutes. I did my usual 5-6 costs of CA and micro mesh till it shines..

I think I was mistaken on the accent wood. I think it's walnut.. It's nowhere near as hard as Cocobolo.
That is why I call it the mystery box.. I never quite know what I have in there.

I can't find my final stage 12,000 grit so I only got to 8000 on this one.

In 5 or 6 months it'll be a nice shade of purple.
