    Eucalyptus?

    Anyone had any experience of turning bowls (or anything else!) from eucalyptus? My neighbor has a very healthy 45-footer he's going to have removed soon - it's close to 30" in diameter at the ground and I've been offered anything I want from it.

    Grateful as I am for the offer, I don't want to waste my time with it if the wood is not worth the effort of harvesting, cutting, storing, drying, etc.

    Your opinions will be much appreciated. TIA.

      BobL and Scottydont have both posted pictures of pens made with eucalyptus. Do a search for 'eucalyptus' in turning forums. They turned out really nice (no pun intended).

          Yes, I turned a couple of pens from some eucalyptus....but....

          They were some stabalized blanks I got off of EBay. I haven't turned many stabilized blanks and they were the right price. I haven't turned anything larger than pens from it so, sorry, I can't really be of much help.

          I can tell you that those blanks sat in my box-O-blanks for a long time cuz whenever I would look at them I'd say to myself "Why in the heck did I buy these boring looking pieces of wood", and threw them back.

          I finally turned one and was very pleasantly surprised at the nice color and grain that emerged from it after it was finished.

              One thing to remember. Eucalyptus has about 50 different species with very different woods. I have some that is more red than cherry is, but I've seen other colors also.

              The red stuff I have is gorgeous and while I haven't turned any (no lathe), It tools very easily so I bet it wouuld turn very nicely.
